Best settings to rip Anime dvd's?

So what are some nice approximate resolutions I should aim for with anime of that 90 min length?

That depends on the bitrate you are using. From that time, I estimate that you have around 950kbps for the video bitrate (and a 128kbps MP3 file). For a 16:9 aspect ratio, a resolution of 640x() is perfectly alright. For a 4:3 aspect ratio, a resolution of 640x480 may still be alright, though you will have to check the resultant video, as different videos compress with different ease.

And a 2-pass mode encoding will help raise the quality, greatly. Where possible, use Inverse Telecine as well, since this reduces the number of frames per second, meaning that each frame will henceforth get a larger share of bits than they would without IVTC.

I have a couple 90 min approx anime dvd's that I wish to divx and from what I understand because of the content of anime it compresses somewhat better meaning that I should be able to 1. give it a higher bitrate or 2. a higher resolution than a normal dvd movie.

I wouldn't depend on that principle.

As I said, different movies compress differently.

This is the sort of reply I was after, thanks. See, I did a rip of a movie called The Day the World Ended. Kinda crappy scifi flick, but I enjoyed it. Anyway, I used Gordian Knot, encoded it with a bitrate of around 950, with 128 mp3 audio, and at a resolution of 640 x something divisible by 16.. ( I can't recall exact figure there).

Anyway... I left it overnight, and when I checked on it in the morning, the final file size was around 220mb or something and when I checked, the WHOLE movie was there.. all 90 mins (approx) of it.

BUT, even in it's default window mode it was obviously blocky and full screen you could still watch it, but again, the blocks were very obvious. I've done 1-pass rips that have looked a lot better.

This was my first attempt at a 2-pass rip. I was using divx5.02 pro. So where did I go wrong there? It's got me stumped.

I'm going to try again now... but I have forebodings...

A 220MB size for a full movie video is seriously under-sized!!! It is no surprise that you are experiencing macroblocks.

Try reencoding at a higher bitrate, and if necessary, decrease the max. quantisizer value to 8 or lower (And leave the min. quantisizer at its default 2). Make sure that you do the 2-pass first pass, followed by 2-pass second pass.

Thanks for the help... from what I recall I had the max quantizer or whatever the default which I think was 30 =\ should have made it 12 like the guide I guess.. oops.. perhaps that was the problem

First time I tried to do this movie (day the world ended) I tried to do the compressibility check and it failed somehow. I did it just now and it seemed to succeed but when I tried to load the .log file I couldn't find it anywhere. Here is what I have from the file within Gordian Knot...

From what I can understand there I should have a file called dayworldended_5_blahblahblah under my c:\my documents\shell_day_the_world_ended\ folder... but I don't... it's non existant.. why?!

From what I can see everything went as it should... plus the _.avi file in Gknot's dir looks ok.. altho it jumps frames.. obviously the compressibility check avi..

I think this is the step that's letting me down.. what am I doing wrong?

Try reencoding it at the recommended quantisizer values this time.

No wonder your movie came out under-sized, what with a max quant. of 30.

Regarding the compressibility test, I'm not familiar with it, so can't comment there. However, it seems to me that the first pass was successful, but GK is unable to open the log file for the second pass. Hence, you haven't got your resultant movie. You could try reencoding the movie yourself. Manually direct DivX to the log file that has been created in the first pass, use the same exact settings that were used in the first pass, and you should have your final movie in no time.

Hmmm... still no joy. The log file doesn't exist.

I am wondering about something.

How much hard disk space do I need free before I try to do a 2-pass rip. At the moment I have 4 gb free approximately (this is after I've ripped the vobs to the harddrive and extracted the ac3).

I only have a 10gb hard drive and I'm thinking that perhaps the 2-pass isn't happening because well.. it hasn't got the space to do the first pass.

On the good side of things, as a test, I jumped into Virtual dub, used the avs Gknot had created and compressed the avi using XviD codec at a constant bitrate of 960, 1pass. Then I used nandub to combine the avi and mp3.. voila.. not a problem. Movie created nicely and I can even handle the quality as long as I don't go running full screen.

So... maybe I should forget about 2-pass until I have a bigger harddrive or is there another way to get around my problems? =\

4GB should be more than enough for a 2-pass encoding. The log file is relatively small (about 10-20MB, depending on the length of the movie). Here's what I can suggest. GK has created an .avs file for you and you can use this to do your own manual encoding (Hey! It's more challenging and fun this way!). Make sure that all cropping, resizing, subtitles, etc. have been included in the .avs file so you won't have to bother with those tasks in Virtualdub.
1. Open .avs file in VirtualDub
2. Making sure that the Video tab is set to Full Mode Processing, select Compression -> DivX codec (I will assume that you are using 5.02)
3. Configure -> DivX codec tab -> Variable bitrate mode and select '2 Pass, First Pass.' and also specify the location and name of the .log file (Just under the Variable bitrate mode window)
4. The rest of the settings are pretty much up to you. Input the desired bitrate, and oh yes, use min. quant: 2 and max. quant: 8-12
5. Go back to the main VirtualDub interface and go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the 'false AVI output.' The first pass is now being performed and a non-playable AVI file being created
6. When the first pass has been done, go back to the DivX config. dialog and change the Variable bitrate mode to '2 Pass, Second Pass.' Don't change any other parameters (You should finalise all settings before commencing the first pass)
7. Go back to the main interface again and go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the file (A playable one it shall be this time ^_^)
8. When done, check that it is working (There is no reason it is not when the processing is completed)
9. You can mux the video with the .ac3 file using nandub easily

That should help you in a way or two.

I'm always all for 2-pass encoding mode. Anyway, to answer this question, the DivX codec 5.02 will provide superior 1-pass encoding results, compared to 3.11 1-pass.

Ok.. hmmm.. interesting. From memory, when I went to use the existing .avs in Virtualdub to encode it I couldn't find Divx5 listed there anywhere in the compressions. Only what looked like Divx4's and XviD, amongst some others.. I'll just double check what's there now and write it down here

Hmm. I don't see any mention of DivX 5.x nor 4.x in the list. You should try reinstalling it. It's probably the reason why you don't even have the .log file from the first pass (that was probably not carried out as well).

WOO HOO!

You were right... well sort of. I had divx 4 installed at the same time, so the divx 5.02 codec wasn't working it virtualdub or anything, divx4 was overiding it. I just ducked into my multimedia properties and removed any 4 related codecs and edited my system.ini to make doubly sure, rebooted, then installed divx5.02 again, check my system.ini to make sure it was referenced to fine, and when I did my compressibility check this time, it worked great.

I let the movie rip overnight, got up.. voila.. perfectly ripped movie (although about 65mb short of my 700mb target.. who knew anime would encode so well!).

Doing Behind Enemy Lines tonight.. should work a treat
