NTSC Interlaced Film encoding Question

I' trying to encode in divx 5 a NTSC, 29.997fps, interlaced film using Goridna Knot.
This the steps that I took:

I didn't force film it through dvd2avi,
loaded the avs (notice that at this pt. the fps is still at 29.997),
did the resolution...
and finally, save and encoded.

Now at the point of save and encode, I choose fast deinterlace and then I noticed that at the next screen (the I could select an option which was "IVTC in AVS correct frame count". What is this button for?

Also, can I force film and then deinterlace?

I'd recommend that you try using IVTC and see if it properly removes interlacing artifacts. I always prefer IVTC over deinterlacer of any kind, for this kind of material, because it does not result in blurring and some degree of "smudging" of the video. Besides, it reduces the framerate to 23.97fps (which really does not look any different than 29.97 fps), and allows each frame to get more bits than they would at 29.97 fps, for a given value of assigned bitrate.

Donald Graft's Decomb.dll filter is an excellent IVTC for AVIsynth btw.
