Should we use DivX3 or DivX5??

I've been encoding movies for a while and have been successful with DivX3 and DivX5.

In my experience DivX5 produces slightly better results and the encoding process is a lot quicker, however many new movies still seem to be encoded using DivX3.

Therefore which codec do you think we should be using?

Apart from the fact that only one of the codecs is legal, please can you share your advice on the advantages and disadvantages of each?

You should try the xvid or the 4.31 open source codec - but I prefer the xvid. The divx 5 stinks and the 3.11 (low motion) is only good for short movie or to put movie on 2 cd - I like it very much !!!! But it's for kid, I mean when u begin. Now I trying the xvid and it's a good one, nice picture, but more complicated - it also means more options. Spend some time trying it, lose a few hair becoz it won't work - as usual - the first times, but it should be the winner - if someone goes on with the project...

There is no single solution. Apparently, different things work for different people. You may wish to experiment with various codecs to attain the best results. Personally I prefer divx 3.11 alpha when used with sbc control in Nandub. Doom9 has conducted a thorough codec test, which apparently supports my conclusion

          DivX5 a pleasant surprise!

..I thought I might get told off for not mentioning Xvid in my post

I have been planning to give that codec a try as well!

After using Nandub/DivX3 for several months I think that Gordian/DivX5 has been a pleasant surprise - there's little to configure, encoding is quicker, results seem slightly better and with less errors.

So I would swap to DivX5 for all my encoding, but few people seem to be using it, so I'll probably continue with DivX3 for the time being (and try out Xvid too )

I'd like to try xViD too, but am wondering how its quality compares to DivX (3.11 and/or 5.02) and whether it has certain functional/technical advantages over DivX.
