Downloaded Divx file is 5% too big (to fit on a cd)

Downloaded a Divx film, but even after Ive cut the credits AND a small part of the start it is STILL slightly too big (10mb too big) to fit on one cd.

I dont really want to go thru the film to cut out a couple of scenes (of course!)

Im not sure what I can do? i.e to make it 5% smaller (without re-encoding)

Or maybe that is the only solution.

i.e. to load it into DVD2AVI > OPen Gordian Knot and specify the file size(so that it shoudl then fit on one cd).

But when I did this - I get a green screen (in DVD2AVI). Why?

Ive never had this before. The DVD2AVI settings window tells me that it is NTSC (never had one of these before) and then the programme crashes.
Shoudl I change some settign in DVD2AVi to allow for the fact that it is NTSC. Or is it somethign to do with the video Divx codec used (it is infact Divx3 - but im not sure why this should be a problem, as when i load the file into GSpot - to identify the properties of the file it tells me that I have that particular codec installed)

Anyway, I would only need to -re-encode the entire Divx if there was not another (less time consuming) option.

What about re-encoding the audio at a lower bitrate (i.e 112 as opposed 128 - or whatever)?

Is it possisible to do this? How?

I dont knwo how to extract the audio from a Divx file.

Remember this a downloaded file, sio i dont have the separate audio mp3/acc files.

    many thanks

This can be accomplished using VirtualDub (Make certain to set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying")...

As you say, if you can't cut away anymore, your only option is to reencode at a lower bitrate.

Of course you can't use DVD2AVI, because it's for DVD to AVI conversion, not AVI to AVI. Use virtualdub.

Reencoding only the audio is an option. Assuming that the video has 128 kbps audio and you are willing to reencode at 112. You gain 16Kbits per second. Which translates into 120 KBytes per minute. So to reduce the filesize by 10 MB your video must be longer than 85 minutes.

To do this load the file into virtualdub. Select Video->'Direct Stream copy', Audio->'Full processing mode', Audio->Compression and configure the mp3 encoding. And save that as a new file.

you mean 're-encode the Divx5.02 file' to a lower bitrate so the resulting file has a lower file size? (i.e not just re-encoding the audio to a lower bitrate - in fact this woudl probably not reduce the file size enough).

So sorry to be a bit slow, in order to re-encode the Divxfile (yeah, of course it was a bit silly of me to think that I coudl use DVD2AVI) i open the file in VD (and select direct stream etc) and then what do i do, VIDEO>Compression.selct video compression>Divx5.02pro codec ?

but where do i go (in VD) to set the compression (Divxpro5.02 to Divxpro5.02 ??) values so that the resulting fiel will be that 5-10% smaller? Do I simply change the configuration of the Divxprocodec encoding bitrate by 5-10% (by moving the slider)?(e.g a change from 890 to 860?)

is it as simple as that?

how will the audio be affected - and what values should I use? (VBR/mp3 interleaving options)

        thanks for your time

Virtualdub will do every kind of AVI->AVI conversion you could possibly want to do.

hmm, I was acctually thinking that recompressing the audio would be more than enough. Of course I don't know how the audio is compressed so I could be wrong.

Well almost, to recompress the video you should select video->'fast recompression' then select video->compression->divx5.02 and configure that.

You will need to calculate the appropriate bitrate, using a bitrate calculator.

Download Advanced DivX bitrate calculator, a calculator to help you make DivX movies of a certain size

And of course I would suggest that you use 2-pass encoding. To do that you must first select '2-pass first pass' in the divx5.02 encoder properties page. Save that as a new avi file. Wait for the conversion to finish, go back to the divx decoder properties page and select '2-pass second pass', without changeing any thing else and save that as a new avi file.

Try setting it to direct stream copy, if the audio stream is vbr mp3, virtualdub will complain about this when you start the conversion, and you will need to recompress it as a cbr mp3 stream.
