    VirtualDub with MPEG2 support

    It's called VirtualDubMpg2.
Version alpha 0.3 is out at http://virtualdubmpg2.sourceforge.net/

For those who don't know it :

VirtualDubMpg2 is based upon three existing programs : Nandub, VirtualDub, and DVD2avi. It basically adds 2 audiostreams and MPEG2 support to VirtualDub 1.4.10.

It's particularly interesting for MPEG2 -> DivX conversions since when using bilinear 720*xxx resize it is up to 20+% faster than DVD2avi1.83 ...

Does it presently handle ALL MPEG2 formats, or only .VOBs, as indicated in DVDDigest/DivXDigest?

A very intersting development. Mpeg 2 support would definately add to the value of Virtualdub

all MPEG2 goodies(multi angle, menus), certainly not.

But you can open files captured by a Radeon or generated by PowerVCR, if that's what you're thinking about.
However, MPEG sound support is untested (as is PCM), since I only test with vobs containing AC3 sound.

I'm asking about MPEG2 formats - such as SVCD and "plain vanilla" MPEG2, as opposed to .VOB.

I guess I'll simply check in out...

            Changes in alpha 0.31 (16th october, 2002)

            - Added bicubic vertical (only) resize for YV12. Works only for "Precise" and "Neutral". It runs 15+% faster than YUY2 on a P3-733 with my Excalibur test vob (720*576 to 720*432). It was not very seriously tested; let me know if you find bugs ...

hmmmmmmmmm.....the auther didn't want MPEG2 support in VD for "copyright" reasons....hmmmm

but it would be cool if it did support it on the other hand.....

Another tip for people having problems opening MPEG2 files:

make sure u have a GOOD MPEG2 filter system installed on your system, for example Cyberlink or Ligos..

                It WILL work..

The current versions of Virtualdub and nandub won't open MPEG-2 files, regardless of whether you have MPEG-2 filters installed or not!

I will not jump as quickly to such a conclusion

I mentioned that because I did it successfully once. It may be broken in the new releases or not work reliably with all files...
Please let me know if you know of a reproducible bug that does not happen with software such as DVD2AVI ...

VirtualDubMpg2 will not go past version alpha 0.31
The sourceforge project will remain as it is now.

But development goes on in VirtualDubMod, that merges various modified versions of VirtualDub (Mpg2, AVS, OGM).
