I am new around here, but have made lots of successful Divx rips. Mp3 is good if you use PC speakers or even an amplifier with a subwoofer. But if you want really nice sound, try AC3...

Although, I will be honest and say, I have trouble with AC3 sound encoding. Thats why I posted a thread here today for help.

      thats difficult to answer

i personally do NOT like ac3 unless you have the apropriate hardware and the ac3 signal will be received by this hardware correctly ( i.e. dolby digital 5.1)

mp3 can handle dolby SURROUND 2.0 very well and when normalizing an mp3 this will sound better on many system than the *original* ac3 file which will be too loud in action scenes (explosion) or hardly be heard in other scenes like dialogues.

the mp3 file can be done with Constant BitRate or Variable BitRate (cbr vs vbr).

vbr will be more flexible in terms of using the best compression for the required scene.
cbr, however, is said to run better on some systems (vbr may result in a little stuttering sometimes).

OGG may be the best format for future use.
you will need LESS bitrate for similar quality compared to mp3.
thus more bitratecan be used for the video stream.

Use the "--alt-preset standard" preset command line to create your MP3 in LAME (Yes. LAME is another type of MP3 encoder). The APS preset will create a VBR MP3 with a bitrate around 192 kbps or lower, depending on the quality of the WAV source.

Better sound quality COULD have been achieved if only there was a way to replace the default FhG decoder (that ships with Windows) with the better MAD or Shibatch decoder...
