DivX Enc 5 v1.09 Error

Ok I created a .d2v file in DVD2AVI, opened it up in GordianKnot 0.26.1, and created a .avs file. I opened this .avs file into DivX 5 Enc 1.09 as the input AVS file, and set my output to the same directory (it's a temp directory on C.

My virtualdub 1.4 path is within the GordianKnot directory, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it...

BUT, whenever I add the job to the queue and click on "Start All Jobs," it opens up VirtualDub with an error message stating: "Video format negotiation failed : use slow-repack or full mode."

Why are you using divx5enc ? GordianKnot not working for you ?, let try to address the problem instead of working around it.

Could you try loading the file 'C:\[ DivX Temp ]\StirOfEchoesAVS.avs' into virtualdub, select video->compression, select the Divx5 codec, click configure and set 'Variable bitrate mode' to '2-pass first pass', click Ok,OK. And save as a avi file.

I don't think you will succede with the above, but when you get an error message, tell us exactly what it says, and where you got it.

Ok I did as instructed, and this is what I got:

First Error Message:

Caption: "Fatal Error"
Description: "Could not open log file for writing"

Second Error Message:

Caption: "VirtualDub Error"
Description: "Cannot start video compression:

The source image format is not acceptable.
(error code -2)"

Does that clear anything up?

EDIT: khp, I tried using GordianKnot today and everything went fine until VirtualDub started encoding and my filesize was turning out to be over 80GB large!!! I thought maybe it was a bug or something, but probably a bigger problem....

Reinstall Divx5.02. And retry compression in virtualdub. If that does not solve the problem, select video->Compression in virtualdub, select the divx5 codec, click configure, go to the 'General Parameters' tab and click 'Reset Codec defaults'. And Try again.

Re-installed DivX 5.02 Pro codec - no go.

What resolution are you using ?, make sure that both height and width are divisible by 16.
Does the clip showup OK, in virtualdubs preview window, when you load the avs file into virtualdub ?.

Yeah the .avs file shows up in both virtualdub preview boxes.

This does represent a serious problem. Divx5 uses macroblocks of 16*16 pixels.
Resolutions that are divisible by 4 will also work, but will be less effecient than resolutions that are divisible by 16.

Wow that was it - it's working now.

I looked back at GordianKnot's resizing menus and sure enough I had the height divider set at "1" instead of "16."

I'm encoding the .avs file in DivX5Enc now (VirtualDub is encoding it) - what will I get at the end? How do I get the audio off the .vob files to combine it with the output video file I get when VirtualDub is finished?

When you created the DVD2AVI project file, DVD2AVI should have extracted all the audio streams, form the vob files. Usually you will get one or more AC3 file. You need to figure out which one you want (the one that has "T01" is usually the main track). Then you can mux the AC3 file into the AVI file or convert it to mp3. But usually one would tell GordianKnot to handle all this, in the audio1 encoding tab, before starting the encoding.

But surely whatever guide you are using will tell you how to do this.

Well I'm not using a guide this time. I'm finding that I do learn more on my own, though it does take about double the amount of time.

DivX5Enc seems to be a good program, just seems that GordianKnot uses too many confusing menus and things in the audio department - I could never understand what it was asking me to do with the audio in the final encode menu.

I've got all the .AC3 files from the DVD2AVI rip, so I'll follow whatever guide I can find on how to join that with the movie.
