Converting DVD 2 AVI

Hi, just before i go on to ask for help, i have looked at many links, tried all sorts of stuff but i have not managed to convert a dvd to an avi, well i have but the file size was still massive with a bite rate of 500 for 100 min film!

I have no trouble converting to vcd but i think avi is much better for storage and as im gonna be just useing it for backups i was wondering, what is the best freeware out there?

What should i use as i get alot of crap stuff that dosnt work!

Im not asking for hand holding, just a little point in the right direction! help!

By the way, what do you mean by 'a bite rate of 500 for 100 min film'? Are you actually saying 500MB for 100 min movie? That seems acceptable to me.
