How to use Multipass with divx 5 with virtualdub?

Hello guys.
I just wounder if anyone could help me this question.
i am using DVDX 2.X when i encode a movie with this program i
can chose enable 1pass and second pass in the menu.
but i have to make some modification on the avi after the conversion is done. so i start virtualdub and when i chose compression i can select the divx5 codec, but now the question is
how do i make it run 2 passes on the already encoded DIVX file?
i can chose

1 pass
multipass 1st pass
multipass nth pass

there is no option in virtuadub as in DVDX "enable 2:nd pass"

any ide how the workflow is in virtuadub?

and a second question.
if i have already made an DIVX with multipass
and i need put filter etc on it and then i "REENCODE" the file again with multipass. will i lose any quality comparing
with the "ORIGINAL DIVX"?

To use 2-pass encoding in virtualdub, you need to encode once with 'multipass 1st pass' When that is done, you encode again (using the same source file) using 'multipass second pass'.

Yes, this is why people prefer to do filters in their original conversion program since you are already spending a good 4 hrs min for high quality 2pass divx. If you cant get the filter you want with DVDX try this. Convert to AVI uncompressed and then use VDub to rencode with filters. This will take forever but you should suffer minimub quality loss (note: you will need a really big hard drive to store an uncompressed AVI) don't do this if you don't have at least 30 GB free for about a 90 minute movie.

Or even better, learn how to do frameserving, to get directly into virtualdub. It requires nowhere near the same amont of space and is much much faster.

Doom9's xvid guide explains how to do DVD ripping with gordianKnot and XVID. Which involves using avisynth frameserveing to get into virtualdub.
The guide is intended for DVD ripping using XVID but the same methods apply to mpeg-2 to divx conversion.
