I have exactly the same Problem.

    I'm running a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ on a MSI KT3Ultra2 Board with 768MB DDR-Infineon Ram and GeForce 4 Ti 4400 (Leadtek A250).

I used the following Programs to encode:

    VirtualDub
    VirtualDubMod
    Dr. Divx
    DVD Decrypter

No matter what Codec I use the System reboots after some time. (DivX 5.0.2 - 5.0.5, XVid) I even reinstalled Windows XP SP1 but got the same effect. I'm also using the latest VIA 4 in 1 and NVidia 43.45 Display Drivers.

I'll give it a try now to clock down my memory though I never experienced any Problems. Didn't have any heat problems either though the machine is mainly used for gaming purposes. Where can I disable the reboot function? I coud post my error message then too.

Thanx for the help and support!

      Well... No...

I just tested with lower RAM Clock. I had no reboot now but the program crashed and closed itself. Unforunately the Program didn't write an error.log but I found a few notes in the readme:

-Dr. DivX may crash if no AC3 decoder is present when encoding input files that contain AC3 audio (Got one, but even when encoding only the videostream crashes occur. Where can I get another decoder to test?)

-Inclusion of some VirtualDub filter may cause Dr. DivX to crash (interesting, I'm trying to get rid of all VDub-components)

When I think about it I always hab VDub installed on my system no matter what I tried. I don't know if this is significant but i'll give it a try to uninstall it.

EDIT: I removed all installed video-codecs exept DivX 5.0.5 (At least I think so) but got the same effect. BTW: My CPU temperature never exeeded 69°C/156°F and the system temperature was at 56°C/132°F. So this shouldn't be the problem I guess.

too aggressive memory settings and/or mainboard drivers are my number one suspects.

Ok I just had another testing session:

          - I made a clean install of Windows XP SP1
          - I installed Soundcard (Terratec DMX Xfire 1024) and Control Panel for it
          - I installed VIA 4in1442v(a)p2 (this is the exact name mentioned on the VIArena Homepage)
          - Installed DrDivx, DivX 5.0.5 and AC3 Filter 0,68b

My system memory and CPU are running at their specified clock and I'm using standard Windows GeForce Ti 4400 Graphics Driver.

But: After some time of encoding I get an error (the Microsoft error report thing) and the program shuts down. What else can I do????? I have no idea.

Its getting really annoying right now, you can believe me!

          Thx for any help!

When i first got WinXP i used to get alot of the serios error messages and "STOP", but this was resolved by using windows update to keep windows updated whcih improved stability.
Another definite reason for the crashes was the nVidia drivers i had (21.83) but when i upgraded to my current drivers (detonator 44.03) it solved my problems.

So try updating your windows and/or nVidia Drivers.

That's what I thought it would be. Normally any spontanious rebooting or errors like this are due to overheating. When I overclock my CPU anything over 2.6GHz my system will reboot in the middle of an encoding session because the CPU gets over 140 degrees F. Soon I'll be getting some liquid cooling so I can so some HEAVY OCing.

Thanks for the help but I found out what my problem was: I don't know why but it seems that my Soundcard caused these problems.

I now use onboard-sound and everything works fine! Terratec may build nice cards but the drivers seem to be their problem... I had to sell my old one when I updated to Win XP cause there are no drivers at all for XP. Well onboard-sound will do I guess
