How to rip subtitles?

Okay i have searched but can not find any advice on how to begin backing up a DVD with subtitles. For some reason after ripping with DVD decrypter i do not see any subtitles on the vob's. That being the case i cannot see how they will appear after encoding. I am lost on:

1) Do i need a unique program to rip subtitles or can i somehow configure DVD decrypter / Smartripper to do the job?

2) I have read that you can either encode the subtitles permanately to the backup (which for some reason results in lower quality of the overall movie, is this true?) or you can "soft" encode it so you need a filter to see it later (not sure how that works since the subtitle files must be on the Backup somewhere, perhaps you would have the subtitles as an extra file on the Backup?

I am using Gknot .28 & Divx5.05 so i am searching for compatible tools. Any advice is welcome.

i prefer subrip to extract the subs to an srt file which i then include into the ogm container.

Okay i did manage to create a srt file in SubRip, any ideas on what to do with it now?

Playing back individual .VOBs will not allow you to use ANY features of the DVD (subtitles, languages, chapters). Playing back individual .VOBs can also, on occasion, lead you to believe that you've somehow gotten the wrong language or the director's commentary (because the physical order of the language streams was changed when the DVD was created)

1) Use "File Mode" to rip the ENTIRE DVD to a folder named "VIDEO_TS

2) Use the latest version of either WinDVD or PowerDVD to playback AS DVD

Thx Setarip for the advice, i did note on your previous posts how to set up WinDVD or PowerDVD to play the vob's as a DVD (good instructions). However i am trying to figure out how to encode the subtitles to a CD together with my backup.

whats wrong with using ogm?
you could use mp3 as soundformat.

and most importantly: if you dont want to use a better container format like ogm, you could also load the srt with your video using players like bsplayer.

My mistake, at first i thought you were referring to the ogg format. I really don't know what ogm is so i will do some reading on this board (starting with your sticky). Thx for the tip about Bsplayer.

OGM is a container format like (old) avi or (new) matroska.

you can easily integrate subs into ogm or matroska together with your favourite mpeg4 video (no matter if it is divx3,4,5 or xvid or ms mpeg4 v1,2 or 3) and whatever soundformat you prefer - ogg for me, mp3 for you.

I have tried to play my .srt subtitle file (ripped using subrip) in BSP player to no avail. It informs me that it is an "unknown file format []" Do i have to do anything else to convice BSP player to reconize the .srt file?

could you copy the first lines of your srt to see if it was an srt file

and which version of bsplayer did you use; any recent one?

I am currently using Bsplayer 0.85.492. I did download and install the newest version of 086.496 however it will not run on my system, just hangs on opening a file forever. Do you think my verison is too old perhaps? As far as my subtitle file i have it attached below. It is in a text format though as the forum will not allow me to upload a .srt extension.
