"I am a user of TMPG and cannot for the life of me get it to encode xvid"

    A) What is the specific error message generated by TMPGEnc when you attempt to load the file into it?

    B) Does the original Xvid-compressed .AVI play properly on your system?

    C)

    1) Load the video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

If you're able to playback XVID-compressed .AVI videos because you've installed only the FFDShow filter, be advised that TMPGEnc REQUIRES that you have an actual XVID codec (different than a filter) installed on your system...

"Have downloaded and installed xvid codec for windows xp"

            1) If you simply open VirtualDub (without even loading a file into it), from the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and scroll through the list of video codecs. Is the Xvid (NOT DivX) codec listed?

            2) You're not trying to create an SVCD with a freeware version of TMPGEnc that's more than 30 days old, are you?

            3) What specific settings and procedures are you using with TMPGEnc?

            4) What version of TMPGEnc are you using?
