    DVDx + DivX Problem

    Hi!

I have a problem when i use DVDx to encode a DVD into DivX 5.05 format. My computer randomly turns itself off and it doesn't even try to close Windows or throw an error message; it seems it just cuts the power off. Does anyone know what the cause of this problem might be?

BTW, i'm using DVDx 2.2, DivX 5.05 on my Sony Vaio Laptop, with AMD Duron at 1GHz, 256MB RAM and Windows XP.

    Thanx in advance
    My old system:

AMD Duron at 1GHz, 256MB RAM
    VIA KT133A Motherboard
    ATI RAGE 8MB VRAM

on this configuration the encoding takes quite a time,
    doesn´t it?

maybe you have a problem with your power managment settings.
go to your system and set them all to computer is always on
    and never off

means .. stand by modus --> never
turn off hard disk --> never

it also might be the case that you have a heat problem
that causes you laptop to crash, due to intensive read of
    the DVD drive.

    to avoid this.....
rip the files you want to encode to your hard disk rather than
reading them from DVD during the whole encoding process!!

    good luck!!

Thank you for your advice I'll check everything out. Unfortunately i don't have enough space available to rip the files to my hard drive, that's exactly the reason why i use DVDx

The funny thing is that this problem started happening very recently, i used to encode everything with DVDx and DivX and never had any problem. The same kinda thing happens to a friend of mine, and his computer is completely different, the only things in common are DVDx 2.2, DivX 5.05 and Windows XP.

      Thanks again

you might give the Xvid codec a try instead of Divx 5.05

it is a very good mpeg 4 codec like Divx5.05
        and complete freeware.
I have switch to it quite a time ago and I use it for almost every purpose storing ,capturing, encoding and it has provided
        excellent results so far.

you may also be inclined to give it a try.
it can be obtained here at the softwaresection.

        good luck

I actually do have the Xvid codec, but i don't know if i have the latest version. I'll give it a try, i've never used it to encode, just to reproduce Xvid content.

          Thanx

Well bro, i suggest you to swith to Gardian Knot as i have used Dvdx many times before.... first of all you always have to calculate Bitrates and other stuf... everything manually, while GK does it all for you automatically... the author of GK is some genius..... 5 bows to the author of GK!

I know DVDx is not exactly the best way to encode, but unfortunately i don't have enough HD space to do it other way. How much free space do you need to encode with GK? around 10GB for a long movie?

yes, only if you Decrypt it, but if you want to encode it directly from the DVD-Rom, then you dont need space more than the space DVDX requires....... its the same..... instead to ripping the dvd to HD, encode it directly........

well i am once again switched to DVDX because of two reasons,
                  1. you can Brighten the movie
                  2. you can do experiments easily

u can also brighten the movie using nandub/virtualdub filters and u can do experiments also!
