200 MB MPG to 65 MB AVI

Can it be done? I've downloaded almost every episode of a TV show as 65 MB AVI files. There is one episode that I can only find as a 200 MB MPG. I want to have that file match the others so that it doesn't throw off my burning. I tried VirtualDub but the file was still huge.

Depends on the resolution and the audio sample rate.

Make sure the audio sample rate is 44100Hz.

Make sure that the res of the video is the same as the rest (this could be the problem)

Please post up more details on this 200MB MPEG file:

    Resolution
Sample rate (not really needed atm)
    Length of Video

      @ techno
I have a similar problem, how do I check the source bit rate, resolution etc?
Only new at this so I have very little (close to none) knowledge of what Im doing.
Any simple step by step would be more than greatly appreciated.
      Thanks in advance.

          RyanC829,

Here's how you can convert .mpg files to .avi files:
          1. Open .mpg file in VirtualDub.
          2. Set Video and Audio tabs to Full Processing Mode.
          3. Under Video, select Compression and choose the DivX/XviD codec. Configure the settings, as required.
          4. Under Audio, select Compression and select a codec (eg. MP3). Choose a desired bitrate (eg. 128kbps).
          5. If the source resolution is not divisible by 16, you will need to resize it to conform to the factor-of-16 requirement. Use the Resize filter with Precise Bicubic/Lanczos mode.
          6. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file.

If you are working with MPEG-2 files, use VirtualDubMod instead and rename the MPG file to VOB (so that VDMod will recognise and open it).

          Regards.

Im a very new newbie to this but from what very confusing (no offence intended to anyone) information I have found or got, I have played and played and found I can compress on average a 426MB MPG's to an average of 150MB avi using the following settings in VirtualDub

            go to file
            open video file

under the 'audio' tab: select 'full processing mode'
under the 'audio' tab: select 'compression' and pick 'MPEG layer 3' with a bit rate in the right menu of '128kbs'
under the 'Video' tab: select 'full processing mode'
under the 'video': select 'compression' and pick 'DivX MPEG-4 3917 Fast' then select configure on the right and set that as:
compression control at 75 : data rate at 768
            go to file
            save as avi
when its finished you will have a good picture with synced sound and its a nice smaller size.
Then if like me you want it back as mpg, smaller than the file you started with, follow these instructions for TMPGenc

go to file and select 'new project'
select 'browse' next to the video source text box
            select your newly compressed avi
select 'browse' next to the output file name and name it what you want.
            select the 'settings' button
under the video tab make these changes:-
            size: 352 x 288
Aspect: 4:3 625 Line (PAL) (NTSC for the US)
Frame rate: 25fps (29.97 for the US)
Bitrate: 768 (do this before the rate control mode changes)
            Rate Control Mode: 2-pass VBR(VBR)
the select 'settings' next to rate control mode and make these changes in there: average bitrate / maximum bitrate / minimum bitrate all to be 768

under the Advanced tab make these changes:-
Source Aspect Ratio: 4:3 625 line (PAL) (NTSC 29.97 for the US)

under the GOP Structure tab make these changes:-
Output Interval Of Sequence Header: 1
MAX Number of frames in a GOP: 15
(tick) Output bitstream for edit (Closed GOP)
            (tick) Detect scene change

under the Quantize Matrix tab make these changes:-
            MPEG Standard

under the Audio tab make these changes:-
            Sampling: 44100
            Channel Mode: Stereo
            Bitrate: 128

then hit 'Start' on the main window.
In about an hour or so, you will have a new Mpg which will be much smaller than the original with not much quality loss.

I have made several 426MB files down to 265MB using the above method.
If you only want to go from large MPG to smaller MPG, just skip the VirtualDub and follow the TMPGenc instructions, opening your MPG instead of an AVI.

Like I said, Im very new at this and have not been able to find any help or instruction in lamens terms for a dead head like me, so after trial and many errors and many hours, I worked out that these settings work great for what I was trying to do.
I figured I would post this in case someone as easily confused or in need of simple step by step instructions like me is looking as well.
If a more experienced person finds anything wrong with this please let me know but as far as it goes to working.
After all is done, I burn the MPEG-1 files off using TMPGenc DVD author with a created menu and they work perfectly in my standalone and PC DVD player.
