    Splitting XVid files using VirtualDub

    Hi,

For some time now, i've been using VirtualDub to crop DivX files. I don't use any of the encoding controls; i just use the direct stream copy so that i can copy the file while cropping it to get rid of unwanted video at the beginning and the end.

Recently, i came across XVid videos for the first time. I downloaded the XVid codec, and the movies play fine in Windows Media Player. However, when i open them in VirtualDub and try to play and crop them, the program cannot decompress the audio file. I can view the key frames by clicking on the key frame buttons, but if i click the play button, or try to copy the file, i get a message that says: "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format."

I was under the impression that the audio format for these files was mp3, and i have no problem playing mp3 files on my coomputer. And, as i said, the audio works fine when i open the files in Windows Media Player.

In case it helps, here is the audio information i got from VirtualDub:

    Sampling Rate: 44100Hz
    Channels: 2 (Stereo)
    Sample Precision: N/A
    Compression: Unknown (tag 0055)
    Layout: 86620 chunks (0.00s preload)
    Length: 27152718 sample (37:42.72)
    Min/avg/max/total frame size: 313/313/314 (26517k)
    Date rate: 96kbps (7.11% overhead)

I'd me most grateful for any help.

    cheers.

    "Compression: Unknown (tag 0055)"

Yes, this indicates that the file's audiostream was created using an .MP3 codec - which you apparently don't have installed on your system.

Download and install an .MP3 codec...

Sorry if i seem a bit dumb, but where might i find an mp3 codec? Are there good ones and bad ones?

Thaks for the advice, but i still seem to be missing something.

I downloaded the codec and installed it, but i still get the same message from VurtualDub, that it can't find an audio decompressor.

Is there something i have to do to let VirtualDub know where to look for the codec?

Have you re-booted your computer (at least once) since installing the codec (This may be required to allow your system to recognize a new codec)?

Yep, i've now rebooted it multiple times, and nothing has changed.

                  1) Open VirtualDub

                  2) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression"

                  3) Scroll through the list of codecs on the left. Is there a listing for an MPEG-Layer 3 codec?

As an experiment, see if the GoldWave audio editor will accept it for input.

                      Open GoldWave

"Drag and drop" the Xvid_compressed .AVI file onto GoldWave's PRIMARY window.

If it does accept it for input, use GoldWave to resave as either .MP3 or uncompressed PCM (.WAV) audio.

                        Better late than never

This is late in comeing, but I saw your post, and thought I'd let you know what worked for me. I had the exact same problem, and this codec worked for me.

I think it was an AC-3 ACM codec you needed.
