divx to svcd.

hi!

Most of the movies I manage 2 get hold of are in divx format cough cough . I have a couple of questions on converting this 2 svcd.

So far what I do is use virtual dub to open the avi file. I then use the mpeg-4 codec version 2 (as TmpEnG does not support divx formats from what I gather) as the method of compression. When I open TmpEnG and select the file I then have to convert it to mpeg-2 (SVCD) which then works a treat in the dvd player in the living room.

What I want to know is:

1, Is there any way of missing out the step of converting the file to mpeg-4 first? is there no program which will allow me to copy from divx direct to mpeg-2? as this process takes bloody ages!

2, Is the mpeg-4 the best method of compression to use? only the output of the file does not look as good as the original divx file. I was wondering if there was another compression method I could use which I could convert directly to mpeg-2 format.

That is incorrect. try it - you'll like it ;>}

TMPGEnc and VirtualDUB should open every AVI-file if you installed the right codec. A good method is to pen the avi in VD start the frameserver and open the served file in TMPGEnc. Than you can use VD's filters and use TMPGEnc to make the SVCD.

im really confused here now guys! I am running the latest TMPGEnc and get the error message "file cannot be opened or is unsupported" this is an avi file and uses the divx codec???

This is not the case when opening the file with virtual dub and the file will open in tmpgenc once converted to the mpeg-4 format???

In tmpgenc:

goto option > environtment settings > vfapi plugin (?) and where it says "AVI VFW compatability" (or similar) right click on it in select higher priorty (make sure it is set to 0 or 1)

It should open any DIVX file.
