Best Codecs ? question from new guy

Im looking for info on the best codec to use for capturing without taking up too much space or loosing much quality, then i will be burning to disc probably as svcd mpeg2, but if there is a way of xvid being pklayed back on dvd players i would consider that.

    Any ideas guys ?

      Any recommendations?

Do you recommend and specific realtime mpeg2 capture cards?

I know some are probably better than others, i wouldnt like to make a mistake.
