problem with asf to avi

as the subjects stats, i got a problem with asf to avi conversion, i have gottan all the required software and codec, but when i lord the asf video with virtualdub1.3c it says can't locate the decompressor for format "wmv1"(unknow), what i do wrong? help!!

The "WMV1" is, I'm fairly certain, indicative of a file created using version 8 Windows Media Encoding utility. Unfortunately, as far as I know (and, rest assured, if I'm wrong, another of our illustrious posters will hasten to correct me), our friends at Microsoft have chosen to provide the codec in such a fashion that only its own WM8EUTIL can use it to compress video, while only players (such as Windows Media Player) can access the decompression features. Older .ASF files, up to and including those created by v.7 can be handled by VirtualDub-ASF.

You could take a shot at loading it into TMPGEnc.
