Changing an xvid rips' AC3 audio to mp3?

Okay, I've been beating myself up for the past week. I'm trying to get some movies encoded for playback on my Dell Axim and I'm trying to do so by re-converting my divx/xvid rips to a much smaller size. One of my main problems is with rips that contain AC3 sound (5 channels).

I've used standard methods to get the video down right but the sound just will not go unless I direct-stream copy (which makes my sound portion 450MB...much too large to fit on a 512MB card).

I recommend that you use the program VirtualDubMOD.
this program has abilities to handle AC 3 streams.
of course you have to make sure that you have an ac 3 decoder installed.
Mark that I'm not talking of decoders that come along with
windvd or powerdvd.
AC 3 decoders can be found in most codec packs,
or in the software section of this site.

Open your Xvid file with VirtualDubMOD.
From the video drop-down menu hit either direct stream copy
or full processing mode if you wish to compress the video stream further.

From the menu "Stream" hit "streamlist".
Right click on your audio stream.
Choose your desired compression.
From the file drop-down menu choose "safe avi as"
and safe your avi under a new filename.
