    Xvid probs

    Right here goes,
I have been encoding into mpeg2 with tmpgenc for ages. I have no probs with divx movies but when I try and encode xvid movies I get no audio.
I have checked this and many other dvd forums and all the suggestions given dont seem to work.
I have raised the directshow file reader to 2 and up. No audio.
I have extracted the audio with virtual dub and used the resulting wav file as the audio source. Still no audio.
I can make mpeg2 files from divx without doing any of the above so I am completely lost, it is clearly something to do with the ac3 audio or whatever is used in xvid.
Help me please I am stockpileing films here!!!!

"I have raised the directshow file reader to 2 and up. No audio."

Have you tried raising it to the "Highest" priority?

This is another thing you can try:

Get a program called "BeSweet" and try to convert the WAV file to an "Mp2" file which TMPGENc should accept.

      Sorry.
By 2 and up I mean I tried it at 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 and so on but to no avail right up to 9. If you mean task priority they are both set to highest.
I do have besweet but have no Idea how to use it!
I couldnt seem to find a guide or help for it.

Any help with besweet would " be sweet"

Cheers for the prompt response Ormonde

When loading the file in I have to look for .avi because for some reason thats all it see's. It says it is a valid file but when I try to encode it I get the following

          "Error 58: Error : Unknown Input-File Format : "C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents\My Videos\Divx\File name\dmd.avi".
          Quiting...
          [00:00:00:000] Conversion Completed !
          Logging ends : 02/12/04 , 21:01:38."
          Why me!!!!

You might have an audio file with a bad (or corrupt) header. Go back to Virtual Dub (or download VirtualDubMod), open your AVI and make sure under "Video" you select "Direct Stream Copy". Then go to "Streams" > "Streams List" and click "Demux" (NOT save as WAV). This should produce an Ac3 file. Then, download a utility called "AC3Fix". You will also have to download the GUI that goes with it. Make a folder and put all the unzipped files in that folder along with the GUI file. Move the AC3 file created with Virtual Dub to that folder also, and then run AC3Fix on the file. This will give you a repaired AC3 file that hopefully TMPGENc will accept.

Actually, I just realized, If you have an XVid file, the audio most likely will be mp3 not Ac3, but use the procedure that I outlined anyway as an experiment. If the audio is indeed mp3, it won't show up in the "Streams List" in VD as a file type that can be demuxed. If for some reason it is Ac3, then continue with the method that I outlined.

You might be right. I cant seem to save the stream anywhere. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHH!!
I am beginning to wonder if this is all worth it!? How would I go about extracting the mp3 if that is what it is? Thanks for all the help so far. I seem to be running out of options though!

Load your avi file in Avicodec or Gspot and it will tell you the specs of your video and audio and if the proper codec/s are installed. This way you will know exactly what you are dealing with.
                  IMO I like Avicodec.

If BeSweet is giving you trouble, you could try to use "HeadAc3he".

Actually, I was able to extract an mp3 out of an XVid file, and it does work in VirtualDubMod. Load the Xvid and go to "Video" select "Direct Stream Copy" then go to "Streams" > "Streams List". When the "Available Streams" dialog box comes up, look at the top section and it should have 3 listings (Source, Desc, and Length) Under "Desc" you should see the audio-it should read something like: "AVI audio stream 1 [tag 0x0055] MPEG 1-Layer 3 (mp3)". Click Demux and your mp3 will be saved as a separate file. If for some reason you don't see anything listed in "Desc", then something else is wrong.

Well I just loaded the file into Gspot and it is telling me it is AC3!?
It says i have 2 available codecs for audio and it does play in media player. So I was thinking is it possibly a problem with conflicting codecs?
I dont seem to have a "streams" setting in virtual dub. So it wont let me follow your previous suggestion Ormonde.

Then use the "AC3Fix" method that I outlined in my 3rd post.
