    XviD re-encoding audio sync problems

I make backups of my DVD's using the XviD codec. However when I try to re-encode the XviD Material with virtualdub into smaller resolution to fit in my Archos player I get a audio out of sync problem! (Both on my PC AND the ****ty Archos AV340)
I even tried to use Divx with doctor Divx... same result.

I use MP3 as the audio stream but I don't "touch it", even so the Movie length seems to be shorter than the audio!
So it must miss some frames?

I also do convert some Enterprise Movies I downloaded and since most of them are convertable without any audio problems some just don't! Even when they show the same things using gspot!

Any idea why my and some other downloaded original created Movies are not convertable without audio problems?

Any help hardly appreciated - !

oh - the goal is to create XviD Movies which are convertable into "anything" else without problem!
I am not searching for a way to make the re-encoded movies work...

    Thanks

      How?

How did you re-encode Xvid using Virtual Dub? I've tried it and it keeps giving me
      "---------------------------
      VirtualDub Error
      ---------------------------
No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.
      ---------------------------
      OK
      ---------------------------"

Can't seem to get around it, even does it on some DivX files I try to re-encode. I'm doing this for my AV320 upgraded to a AV380. Same thing....

        hi mRwAgS_3,
you have a slightly different problem.

re: No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.
        ---
1.) Find out what kind of audio codec is used for your Movie. (As you know the "picture" / "Video Stream" might very well be Divx, XviD or any other popular video codecs beeing used in the avi container.

To do this use a software called "GSpot"

2.) Get the appropriate decoder and install it. One way would be to get the "Nimo Codec Pack". Personally I strongly recomend you to only install the codecs you really need as it can easily mess with other pre-installed codecs. Don't worry if anything doesn't work out just uninstall the Nimo Codec pack and everything should be back fine -that's why I recomended it the first place.

3.) For audio editing / converting stuff I also suggest you use NanDub instead of virtual Dub as it's more capable of dealing with any audio related stuff -it's a modification to the orig. Virtual Dub.

4.) Sometimes you will have to extract the audio stream to raw pcm, encode it to mp3 or whatever you prefer and re-integrate it using NanDub.

-I appologize for using some sloppy explanation but I hope you get the idea!

I hope this was a little help for you, btw. what kind of HD did you use to upgrade your AV320 player?
Did you do it on your own?
I mean did you buy a IBM, Fujitsu etc. Harddrive? What are it's rpm?

PS: I think the AV3xx is not bad, but it could have been more open to other "standarts" like mpg files for instance. And finally it would be kinda cool to customize it a little more (own bg Image and stuff) also the MP3 Player looks way too boring to me...
The appl. doesn't even fill the whole screen and looks uncool...
Even some other skins would do the trick -just imagine what cool visualisations could theoratically be possible with it's CPU...
...and Archos only managed to get a moving L/R bar like my parents old stereo from 1980...

ok, need 2 get some sleep.
        bye bye

          Hi 816 (??),

There is no reasson why it should be out of sync. So it's hard to help you on this very specific problem.

First, i would rip the DVD to a desired size in one step (using two passes, but not reencoding). There are a lot of guides that will tell you how, if needed ask. I'll be glad to help you out.

To solve the problem at hand. I can tell you what i do when i have a audio problem with VD. I demux the audio from the video stream using Audio cleaning lab (but there are plainty of other programms doing the same).I check if the audio has the same lenght (time) as the video stream. I compress the video stream using VDMod and ad the audio stream.

I still think that you should have no problems with audio sync. having set audio as direct stream copy.

Is it a constant delay in audio or is it progressive??

Thanks your answer was very helpful.

re: Is it a constant delay in audio or is it progressive??

I think it is progressive. First it is ok, but as more the... well anyways it's progressing.

              Kenny816,

Thanks for the help, it did work and much appreciated. To answer your question "...what kind of hard drive did you use?" I used a Hitachi 80GB 2.5" 5400rpm. I did all the work myself and went like a breeze. It was very easy and helpful.
