Adding Subtitles (.sub) to xvid avi

I have both the .avi and .sub file. How do I go about getting the subs to actually work?
I did a search but couldn't really find an answer.

    thx.

install vobsub and make sure that subtitles and movie have the same name except for the extension

    like:
    movie.avi
    movie.sub / movie.srt

      ok thanks.

Do I run "SubMux" or what ?
In submux I can only drag and drop .srt not .sub files.

what i described was meant for playback ONLY

you cannot simply add subtitles to the avi container

you will either have to re-encode your entire movie, which is not advisable as it leads to loss of quality

you could add subtiles to movie when using the OGM or MKV container but your playback should be the main goal or not - do you have other plans?

I see. Playback only I would rather use.
I have vobsub installed and both the avi and sub files in the same folder with the same name.
          What do I run ?

you could also use Bsplayer... this player selects automaticly the sub, if it is located in the same dir, and has the samen namen: ex:
              good will hunting.avi
              good will hunting.srt

I prefer this method since Vobsub can be verry irritating: when U open files With other video utillity's like Dr DivX, ect ... vobsub will automaticly load since you access a videofile, allthough You didn't want it to load,...

to convert sub from the ".sub" format (= micro dvd format I think)
to .srt... use subtitle tool (=freeware!)... located on DivX-Digest.com...

or use this direct DL Link...

once installed... open the file wich contains the subs with subtitle tool... and re-save in the wanted format (this prog will pop up a window where you can choose wich format you want .... there are 3 possible formats... micro dvd, srt and ssa....

subtitle tool can open and convert from one format to another....

                  here ya go!
