Trying to create a Divx type file with Gordion Knot. I'm totally clueless as to what I'm doing wrong. I clicked the first button to rip the dvd with DVD decrypter. Then I clicked the DVD to AVI button and selected DIVX compression. What I end up with is an AVI file that is all video an no audio. It creates a seperate audio file AC3 T01 2_0ch 384Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3 but never intergrates the audio with the video. I can play the AC3 file seperately with Windows media player so I know the audio is there, but I can never seem to create a single file with both audio and video. Also why do i end up with an AVI file extention instead of a Divx extention if the compression chosen is DivX anyway? Total newbie at this so please take it slow with me. Thanks. BTW while I'm at it what is difference between Divix fast motion and slow motion compression modes?

First i would advise you to check out nickys guide (it has all the answers).
NG
Short:
Fast motion; for action movies (with a lot of fast moving scenes)
Low motion; yep movies with a lot of slow moving scenes
DIVX is a codec not a file format (to my knwoledge) Avi is the file format for all movies compressed with xvid, divx, etc codecs.
No audio:
I like using GK 0.28. Its easy. But i do it slightly different from you.
1) Decrypter to rip
2) DVD2AVI to create the xxx.dv2 file
3) i load this file in GK and do settings in the resolution tab
4) i choose my resize filter etc in the save & encode menu
5) i save (not encode) the xxx.avs file
6) i load it into VD/VDMOD and compress the audio and video stream.
Result: Very nice quality avi.
There is a person who is a DVX enthousiast but i know nothing about that application.
Try it any questions please ask.

i prefer DVX to any other tool

in your present situation you might want to ADD the ac3 stream to your avi?
use virtualdubMOD (mod!) and open you avi
set VIDEO to direct stream
next go to streams => stream list => add
finally save to new file/name via *file => save as*Last edited by UncasMS; 22 Mar 2004, 07:09 AM.Comment

When I preview the DVD2AVI prior to saving I get only video no Audio. Is this normal or a symptom of the problem I had of no audio in the full save> I'm trying to figure out if I won't have audio until following your instructiontion to compress the streams or if I should have already been hearing audio while previwing the DVD2AVI. I also noticed the audio setting in DVD Decrypter is set to Demux all tracks but the stream setting setting in DVD Decrypter was set to "Direct Stream" should it have been set to Demux instead? Thanks
Keep the default settings of decrypter, they are fine. So in settings=>stream=>direct stream checked (*) and demux unchecked (no *). What decrypter does is remove copy protections. Then you use dvd2avi to demux the vob's. There the setting: audio=>output method=>demux all tracks should be checked. After you have run dvd2avi you should have seperate AC3 audio tracks that you can play in your media player. You can hear if the sounds is present. If you play the AC3 files and hear nothing there is a different problem. The volume is general low on the AC3 tracks.
If you rip a movie and want to make a one CD avi then i would convert the AC3 to wav and use virtualdub. If you are going to make a two CD avi the you can retain the 5 channel AC3 and need to use virtualdubmod.
I hope you have fun with experimenting around with GK, VD, Decrypter etc. Its a nice hobby but o so time consuming. Don't worry about the missing audio, you will end up with a perfect rip.

OK, Guys thanks to you part of the problem solved but now have a bigger one. All this experimenting seems to have screwd up my PC. Need some help sorting out what happened. I finall got it so I was making a useable dub but at 81% virtualdub stopped with error message that there was no more available space to write to on my hard drive. I have an 80 gig hardrive with no partitions. The folder where I have a few movies saved was at 4 gigs so I burnt some to CD and deleted the rest. Tried again to dub and even with the deleted stuff I got the same message. I checked the folder I was dubbing from and it said the one dvd rip and the avi file I was creating amounted to 56 gigs! Is that possible one DVD is almost 3/4 the size of my hard drive?? System info said that system restore was suspended because there was not enough free space for it to run. I tried to defrag and got error message that there was only 2% free space on my HD and defrag needs 15%. So I deleted that 56 gig folder figuring I would ask you guys what I did wrong and start again. Defrag recognized the deleted folder and defraged OK. It now says I have almost 65 gigs available and 84% free space. However the system restore suspension message remains. why isn't it recognizing the free space that defrag now knows is there?Comment

LOL, Nice he digital encoding. Well what you should remember in VD (or VDMOD for that) is to compress your video. Use the bitrate calculater of XVID (second pass option) to set the final size of the avi file. No way that the movie should add up 56 gigs, wauwww.
As far as i know defragmentating will only gice you more speed on your harddisk not more space. Delete unneeded files and this space should be available (remeber to clean up your deleted items box).
Still not working???-------------------------

Still not working. When I check My C drive properties it says now 61.9 Gigs available space. Defrag says 64. 9 so slight difference. but system restore dosen't recognize the freed space. Keep seein message on sysem info system restore tab "System restore is suspended because there is not enough disk space available To restart System Restore, click Disk Cleanup and insure at least 200 MB of free disk space is available" But there is nothing major there to clean up.Comment

Ok this is getting a bit outside the purpose of this forum, but since it all originated with a VD.
1) Forget defrag.
2) Clean up your drive, empty bin and reboot,
2) Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore. STill doesn't work?-------------------------

OK as for the PS, there was no reason to use it. Just that I noticed it was broke when I checked my system info while diagnosing the full disc problem and noticed it didn't fix when I emptied the disc. Even though there was now plenty of room on the disc, the suspension message didn't go away. Your suggestions didn't work perse but they sparked an idea. I clicked on system restore and told it to create a new restore point. I simply named it "Reset System restore" as soon as I did that I went and checked that suspension notice on the system restore tab of my system info and the message dissapeared and the status now says monitoring again. So apparently it was a bogus message that just need my nudging it to clear it. Thanks for all your help and patientsComment
