In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab, rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will allow TMPGEnc to open a properly encoded AVI file with AC3 audio.

perhaps this should be a sticky as so many people have problems with it.

I dont think the tmpgenc plus accepts ac3 even if you do what was suggested. i believe there is a plugin for it but i need to investigate this. instead

Use virtualdubmod to open the file. got to stream lists. then demux the audio.

use ac3fix to correct the audio (run it anyway just to see, only takes a couple of minutes)

use tmpgenc plus for the video. Open the ntsc or pal template using the load button at the bottom, depending what the video file is (pal is 25 fps, find out in virtualdubmod by going to file->file details) in tmpgenc plus go to settings, click on the label to do with the FPS on the first tab, unlock it then select the one corresponding to the film. change some other settings if you wish (3:2 pulldown etc.) Then click start

After about 2.5 hours you will have the converted mpg file of only the video. I presume you are using something like Tmpgenc dvd author to convert the mpg into the correct dvd format.

Open tmpgenc dvd author. create new project. select the template required. add the video file and it should say no specific audio in the audio box. open the ac3fix of the ac3 sound you created earlier. do the rest of the settings as normal.

Burn using whatever (use dvd shrink if it is too big)

      et voila
