    setting colour depth with xvid with auto GK

    so...
    probably a dumb newbie question but....
    i've been using auto GK to encode to xvid -results look very nice too.
    only thing is, the resulting file is 12 bit colour.
    is this a characteristic of xvid or is there some option i should be tweaking... or a limitation of auto GK ?

    Nope. all* MPEG codecs work only in YV12 (12bit) colorspace...

    * except some hq-studio-profile ones

    - DVD (MPEG2) has 12bit colors

    - VCD (MPEG1) has 12bit colors

    - DivX (MPEG4) has 12bit colors

      ok - thanks.
      reason i asked - i create a divx file using autogk,once finished i right click, select properties and it claims to be 24 bit colour.
      i do the same for the xvid and it says 12 bit.
      other xvids i've downloaded claim 24 bit.
      or am i missing something really obvious....
      thanks!

        No, that some sort of misleading info, or even call it a bug !!!

        That happens when you use VDub's full-processing mode...

        While fast-recompress mode the video stays all the time in YV12 (12bit) !!!

        Simple... YV12 -> YV12

        But with its full-processing mode it gets converted from YV12 to RGB24 and then back to YV12...

        Bad... YV12 -> RGB24 -> YV12

        The "color-depth" info is written between this into the AVI container IIRC !!!

        So it saves simply the wrong color info...
