    bad quality when encoding

i've tried to use xvid encoding to get a good result for my backup DVDs, but there are a few minor problems:

    1. i seem unable to get a 1.4GB, last time i tried with upscaling resolutions to get to 1.2GB . i had selected video bitrate to be 1373, but the video bitrate isn't 1373 at all...

    2. the quality doesn't look good, i've seeen better divx3 rips.

    3. can vxid use a manual bitrate anyway? there are no changes in filesize when i select higher bitrates.

    4. what is the best way to select good resolutions, i've looked, but all those guide tell us how to select resolutions, not what the best resolution is... I'd like the opinion of some pro's.

    5. how do you guys fix it to have 1400MB files ? do you just fiddle and try again and again?

I'm using dvd::rip, based on transcode, but that shouldn't matter...

How long are your movies typically? What settings are you using with the encoder? How are you doing the encoding (i.e. any other programs)? What resolutions have you tried using (and are they of the same aspect ratio with the original movies)?

    More details please.

to get the best dvd--->xvid encodes possible, use "gordian knot".

      gordian knot guide here: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/...rdianknot.html

and an xvid guide here: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html

I was using transcode, and like maximum settings,... eg: dual-pass etc...

but the size of the rip seemed only dependant upon the resolution... isn't there a directive (command-line option) that makes it use a kbit/s ?
