Video Editing Noob - Cutting Xvid to burn on svcd

Just want to cut a xvid movie "file contains the whole move plus half after the credits roll". I just want to cut the half off to make a smaller file and then figure out how to burn it to svcd using nero. "will need to figure out how to use 2 cd's".

I tried to use virtualdub but i get an error that it requires a vfw codec to decompress video.

    thanks in advance

you don't have the right codecs installed, first:

with virtualdub, under "file", "file information"

list everything you see under audio AND video here with a screen shot plz.

if you should by chance use tmpgenc/plus to convert to svcd. you don't need to cut with vdub at all, you can do it with tmpgenc "source range" feature....but you still need the right codec(s) on your machine for the file.

ALSO: do you know what codecs (if any, or packs) you have right now?

I got vdub to cut the movie to about half and now when i go to burn the file to svcd in nero it reencodes and makes it over a gig. how do i fix this or what do i need to do so i can burn on svcd " i know it will be more than 1 cd i have both files down to 70 min each.

70 min is too long for svcd i think somwhere around 50 min each, maybe 45. you'll have to make it shorter, it will turn out to be 3 discs likely. i don't use nero to do any encoding, i use tmpgenc, there at least you can get a good estimate how big the file will be after encoding and you can adjust the bitrate.

your going to have to go back to vdub and do some re-cutting

don't bother with PM, i don't believe in it.

"1. What other video editing or burning programs do you recommend."

nothing, IMO it's the best. vso divxtodvd is free though.(i don't rec it) if you just want to go ahead and use nero to encode, shorten the avi's into pieces as i mentioned earlier.

                        2) for 40 bucks, i'd take it. i use a lite on myself, lots here like nec and pioneer also. but i see it supports DL, that's a good thing.
