Playback quality question

I have a movie in AVI format. Playback quality on my PC is OK. However I cannot say that when I watch the movie on my TV. Is there a method to enhance a quality? Maybe to convert AVI file to other formats or increase file resolution? TIA

did you re-encode the movie? or is your standalone player play mpeg-4 (divx)?

if there was no encoding involved, then basically the answer is no, you cannot make the picture quality any higher than the source. the best you could do is apply denoise and/or sharpening filters, but even so, they don't do very much. increasing resolution of a file will not increase the quality, if anything, will decrease overall quality.

if you re-encoded the video, all is not lost, maybe there is a problem with some of your settings, so post your method/settings

It is just the original AVI file downloaded from Internet. So as far as I understand nothing to do. Well, teh connecting question: whether is it a way to recognize the file quality before downloading by the file's parameters?

the resolution will not be the same as your t.v, your program must have a preview feature....

yes, there is a way to check file quality of ANY video file (except maybe rm,wmv, and qt, which are the crappiest file formats anyway), no matter where/how it is being downloaded, as long as the first few kb of the start and end of the file have been downloaded.

eg. if you have downloaded ~10mb of a 700mb file, use 'virtualdub' to open the file, and you will be able to play whatever you have downloaded. 'divfix' will rebuild the index, and output to a playable file on your hard disk, which is essentially the same thing, but slightly faster IMO.

Well first you need to understand that the playback on TV and PC and two different ballgames. And if your source is of low resolution and you are trying to encode it into FULL D1 "Houston we have a problem"....................but there are special authoring techniques that you can use to do all that and still keep most of the quality...............I would say results are excellent (depends from source to source)............you need to use avisynth filters.

Yes and no, in North America a Standard Definition TV displays images at 720 x 540 (NTSC 4:3 Aspect Ratio). So if you are playing the 350x250 image thru the TV it will be zoomed more than 2x so that it fills the whole 720 x 540 screen, which could make it look pretty bad.

Dear Taelon! You could explain my problem better than me. So are there methods to fix this problem? Could I tranform file with small dimension to the file with 2x dimentions w/o loosing the quality?

i think you'd be better off trying to find another file, whenever you see one with a small resolution like that---steer clear
