Does anybody out there have any experience with .mkv because i've been trying to convert using the program (alltoavi) and I successfully made a file with both the audio and video but when I try to convert with the subtitles in I get errors. So does anybody have any suggestions what programs to use or what I might be doing wrong?
.mkv to .avi (either divx or xvid)

snyd,
I would STAY AWAY clear of "AllToAVI" program ... it might have Spyware or somekind of Data extraction ...
I have used both ver 3.0.0.0R2 and ver 4.07.144 and they both lodged crap on my computer AND crashed my Roxio Professional ... I had to Uninstall my Roxio because this little program.
Another program that has support for what you want to do is called "SUPER" by eRight ...
SUPER © is a free enhanced 3D video converter encoder player recorder. It has built in all the required video codecs and audio codecs to encode from and into any possible multimedia format in 2D or in 3D. Rendered output files for PC, iPhone, Xbox, Android, PS3..
And finally there is a Guide that walks you thru ... I remember seeing it ... but I can't recall where ... do google with this search criteria (MKV to AVI Guide)

Possible that you just gave the file an avi extension. For instance with native AVC tracks mkvextract will extract as a raw H.264 stream (*.264 or *.h264). Naming it an avi won't make it an avi, you would need to run avc2avi.
Super, alltoavi, etc. I think are all basically (super also uses ffmpeg) mencoder GUI's and last I checked mencoder couldn't hard encode embedded mkv subtitle streams (libass didn't work either), nor could it demux the streams.Comment
