Stretching screen during encoding to widescreen

    Hi,
I have an avi file on my computer that seems to be half widescreen (560x336). The video was difficult to watch because the picture seemed to be stretched vertically, and making it Widescreen would, I imagine, correct this problem. I tried converting it to DVD recordable format with Divx to DVD program, but the program just doesnt seem to listen to me sometimes. It often, though I tell it to produce a widescreen result, retains the original format in the output. I was wondering if anyone knew of a free converter which would convert divx to dvd and also make it widescreen. If I should use TEmpc, might anyone have a good tutorial for this?

My other question relates to Divx to DVD. When I attempt to convert a certain .avi file, it always slows down to the point where it stops, and there's not enough available system resources to complete the task. Any ideas? Thanks very much!

Use avisynth for the AR conversion.

I believe I still am able to use the trial of Tmpenc, if I'm not confusing it with some other program. But another concern I have is simply how long it takes. Divx to DVD takes about 1 1/2-2 hours to convert the video and burn it onto a DVD, and I dont notice any quality loss. I tried Tmpenc one time, following a tutorial, and it took about 21 hours, and for some reason, after burning it with Nero, there was no sound.

depends on the specs of your pc, settings in tmpgenc, motion search, compression, length etc. tmpgenc generally is kina slow anyway though. the no sound thing is typical and easy to fix.

Would you mind telling me how to fix this no sound problem, how to stretch the screen to the proper aspect ratio, and how to encode the film at a decent speed (hopefully less than 10 hours)? Thanks again

what software will you use? in the second screenshot of this guide is where the adjustment can be made with tmpgenc, instead select "custom ratio" and change the resolution value so as to make it back to letterbox. there are other ways of doing this--this is how i do it, and works like a charm. also using the source range select only say 10 seconds of video as a test in the middle of the clip instead of doing the whole thing at first so you get it right the first time

for the no sound post a screenshot of the file loaded in virtualdub file>file information

in the mean time read this FAQ--DO raise the directshow reader as explained.

No Audio on Output File After Using TMPGEnc
This is usually caused by the compression on the audio of the source file. If it is an AVI file it is very common. With an AVI file the easiest things to do here are set DirectShow Multimedia File Reader's priority to 2 or even better demcompress the audio!

To change the priority of DirectShow, this is done simply by clicking option - environmental setting. Click the VFAPI plug-in tab. You will see DirectShow in the list usually with a priority of -1. Right click on the NAME (not the priority) and click higher priority until the priority is 2 and it is at the top of the list. To decompress the audio for better results, do the following with VirtualDUB...

              1. Click Video - Direct Stream Copy.
              2. Click Audio - Full Processing Mode.
              3. Click Audio - Compression. Select and click ok
              4. Click File - Save AVI and try it with TMPGEnc.

Well, I've played around with it a bit but am still aving trouble. I forgot to mention that I have subtitles to add as well. Again, with Divx to DvD I could just load the subtitle file and it would create a DVD format such that when you play the DVD on the player, you have an option for subtitles. Can you do this with Tmpenc?
Also, I tried the audio priority adjustment method, but whenever adjust the Directshow priority to 2 or even 1, the program crashes. But the audio seems to work now with the avi Im encoding.
Secondly, Im not sure how to do the thing you described with creating a custom aspect ratio. What resolution should I set it to? Please let me know. Thanks
