DVD to DIVX to a 650 or 700mb cd

hello. i am new at this conversion. I wanted to ask someone out there if you can point me to the right direction. I want o copy a movie and put it on a 650 or 700mb cd. I don't want to make a vcd. i want it to be an .avi. Is there a way I can compress the video and the audio and join them back together so they can fit a cd. Please help. I've tried everything and still can't get it to work. I once got aa single .vob file to do it. But it would only let me do one at a time. If that is the way, then how do I join all the .avi files and keep it under 700mb so I can put it on cd.

Sorry...first..I used the MPG2AVI method and it wouldn't let me use my .lst file. So I had to convert the .vob file one by one. Then I tried the DVD2AVI and it came out to be like 850 mb. and it was out of synch. The audio was normal but the video was slow(but it looked god). Then I tried the flask. I understand it until the part about cropping. I thought the DVix could be as big as (i think it was) 640*480. If I am wrong please correct me. I am new to this. I only found out about this DIvx compression when I downloaded THE MATRIX off the web.... It was 640*480 and the audio was great...Perfect...movie and it was just under 700mb. Ever since then i've tried to follow that guide line. Supposibly that movie is hard to covnvert. But were there is a will, there has to be a way..
      Thankx..

THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME I USED SMARTRIPPER TO RIP INTO VOB FILES.THERE WAS 5 VOB FILES IN TOTAL AND THIS WAS AROUNG 5 GIG...WOW I THOUGHT TOO BIG TO KEEP ON ME HARD DRIVE SO I INSTALLED A PROGRAM CALLED RIP IT ALL..AND WOW WHAT A PROGRAM.
THIS ENCODED MY VOBS INTO AVI IN AROUND 3HRS AND TO A MUCH SMALLER SIZE OF 1.2 GIG WHICH WAS GREAT...IT ALSO RIPS THE AUDIO AS WELL INTO 2 WAVS..FIRST WAV IS ABOUT A GIG AND THE 2ND COMPRESSED WAV WAS AROUND 100MB...SO THEN I OPENED UP VIRTUAL DUB SO THAT I COULD SPLIT THE AVI INTO 2 SECTIONS OF 650MB OR SO TO FIT ON 2 CDS.THIS WORKED A TREAT AND THE AUDIO WAS SYNCHED WITH IT..I THOUGHT RIGHT I BET IF I PLAY THE 2 CHOPPED AVI BACK IN WIN DVD THE AUDIO SYNCH WOULD BE OUT BUT TO MY SURPRIZE IT WASNT AND WORKED FINE.I COULD OF JOINED THE AVI'S TOGETHER AGAIN TO PLAY IN WIN DVD BUT ALL I DID WAS DRAG THE 2 CHOPPED AVI'S (PART1) AND (PART2) INTO WIN DVD PLAYLIST AND PLAYED THEM BACK AND IT WAS FINE JUST GOT A WINDOW MEDIA GRAPHIC WHEN THE PART 2 PLAYED..BLINK AND IT WAS GONE SO I CAN LIVE WITH THAT

GO GET RIP IT ALL GR8 PROGRAM

thanx...that helped alot, atleast explained it more for me. I tried the smartripper and then I used the MPEG2AVI program to rip it from the .vob file. I joined all the .vob files in Virtual dub, then I Synched the movie and .wav file. Compressed the fle so it would be no bigger than 650 mb. it all came out to a 589mb .avi file that fits into one cd. Only thing...you can't make it into a vcd because it is not in MPG format. So that is what I am working on right now. I am converting it into mpg and hopefully it will come out to fit into one cd. but if not. I will try the 2 cd method. I was just being lazy and didn't want to change cd in between the movie. Does it look alot better. I get a good picture but the fast scenes are kind of blury. I'll try the one vcd and 2 vcd method. then I'll try a svcd. Just to see what that all is about. Thankx again for all your help.

DVD to DIVX to a 650 or 700mb cd

The easiest way for me to make a VCD is by using Nero Burning Rom 5.5.5.6. Nero will convert your AVI file directly to .dat and depending on how fast your pc and how long the movie it shouldn't take you more than 3-5 hrs including conversion and burning per VCD.

Unfortunately if your movie is any longer than 74 minutes (650mb CD) or 80 minutes (700 mb CD) then you will have to split the movie in two. Hench 2 VCD's per movie.

Well I just finished watching the movie that I had made using he above method. It starts off good but half way through it, it looses synch. The picture goes faster than the words. anyways. I'll try the nero burner...but how do i get the right synch from the audio and video from a .vob file. i'm going crazy trying to figure this movie cnversion out..

You can go to http://www.digital-digest.com there they explain how to go about making VCD's that's perfectly synced.

I used Nandub with (VBR) Mp3 audio and got a great DivX under 700MB with perfect sync.....

                  Give it a try

Thanx for the info.... I visited the Divx website and the digital digest. There are tons of methods. S which one do ya suggest. is it better to bite the bullet and make 2 vcds for one movie or try to compress it onto one vcd. I would like it to be one but if it has better quality on 2 vcd's, then I;ll try that method. Any suggestions would be helpful...Thankx...
I still want to find how someone got the movie THE MATRIX to fit into one cd and it came out perfectly synched and no video problems. It was clear and that's the only one I have ...But I'll keep trying till I find out how it was done. There must be some compressor out there that hasn't been found....i think...

I'm no expert, but I do believe if you resize it a little and make it smaller, like 600x400 instead of 720x480, you'll see a reduction in the file size at the end (if you're using 1 pass encoding).

I don't think there is some magical encoding codec people are using, they somehow did it with the existing codecs. otherwise it wouldn't play back with the codec you're using for playback!

I think if you want just 1 cd movies, you will always have to sacrifice some quality....but as you said, you got a really good matrix video on one cd....i wish i could see it. i'd like to compare it to what i have done.

I just got off a website that was comparing the Mpeg2 to Mpeg4. They say it's alot easier to fit a full length(108) movie into one cd and it still osme out ooking better than the mpeg2 on 2 cds. IT's sord of an upgrade. I am looking for it and when i find and use it I will share my experince with ya. hope it turns out good...

                          If you use mpeg2 it won't fit on 2 cd's...it'll take 4 or 5 cd's.

Mpeg2 needs around 8000 bit rate to avoid all the stupid motion artifacts and stuff.

the mpeg2 format is used for dvds (vob files are mpeg2) or svcds.

since you cannot create vobs and expect them to fit on one or two cd's it must have been an svcd format !???

                            which url was that?

well - whatever it was, mpeg2 is NOT the first choice!!!

use mpeg4/avi with a multipass routine (best: nandub)

svcds need more space than mpeg4 and have limited resolutions.
