another one of those file size probs....=(

    Hi!

I have a problem encoding from DVD to DivX5 Pro. I use Gordian Knot and Vdub (2-pass encoding). And the problem is that the filesize is too small.
Example: The finished avi is 780MB, but I want it to be 1100MB, so I raised the videobitrate from 1350 to 1550 and changed the max.quant from 12 to 8. But the finished filesize is again 780MB. Anybody knows what´s going on?

The video is saturated with frames using the minimum quantizer, raise the resolution, or turnoff b-frames.

you should be happy that the file size is low!

That's really too low from your expected filesize. In that case, why don't you try to make it into a 1 CD rip? You don't have to reduce the filesize by much.

One more thing....i´m using deinterlacing, but that shouldn´t be the problem.

khp>>i´ll try raising the resolution then, what do you mean turning off b-frames? where?

techno>>nah, I want the movie to fit on 2 cd´s without waste of space......=)

Enchanter>>sorry, i meant that the filesize is 780MB without audio, it´s 1110MB with audio, so 1 cd is out of the question.....=)...I only rip with ac3-sound, so the ideal total filesize would be 1400MB for 2 cd´s

If you are already at 704*X res, you should not raise it (you would need a 1 GHz plus machine for playback)

Assuming that you had B-frames turned on (see attachment), turning if off will yield a 20% filesize increase at max quality.

There are some very interresting quality issues regarding B-frames, one might argue that you will get better quality without B-frames, if you are very close to maximum quality.

I have attatched a screenshot of divx5.01 with the B-frame check box clearly marked, but this is the standard version so it's grayed out.

              Ok, thanx.

I had both: - Use GMC
              and: - Use Bidirectional Encoding
turned on. (as in Doom9´s guide)

But I´ll try turning Bidirectional Encoding off.
