    File Sizes

I usually burn files i want to watch on my DVD player as VCD files but the problem is i can only fit 700MB onto these disc so i was going to convert the files to DVD files and burn to DVD disc's which hold over 4gb but the thing i cant work out is after converting them and going to burn them, 250MB files are taking up over 1gb of space going by the counter along the bottom of the screen when using Nero, why is this?

    I can't fit anymore onto DVD as i do to a normal 700mb CD-R.

    Hi Travis355,

When you encoded your movie from VCD (mpeg-1) to DVD (mpeg-2), you just increased the movie file size from 700 MB or less to 2 GB, 3 GB, or maybe more without improving quality at all. Please take a look and try the guide from the link below. You won't need to encode the movie and still can burn more movie to a single DVD though

    Regards

Actually as a VCD you can fit 800MB's on a 700MB disc.

The original file is 250MB's because of its length and bitrate. When re-encoding the new filesize is determined by the source's length and the new file's bitrate. The old bitrate and therefor size has no impact.

For a VCD you can fit 80mins per 80min disc. For DVD even at high bitrate full resolution you can fit more than that so I wouldn't say that you can't fit anymore on DVD. If you drop the bitrate and or resolution you can fit even more, like say 6-7hours at VCD res with acceptable quality.

Ok thanks, most of the files are wmv files that are converted to VCD by Nero, do i still use the above method in the link?

Thats what i wanted to do celtic, fit more files on a DVD at VCD quality.

There is no how about it.

For VCD's the mpg (dat) track is written mode2 form2. Basically error correction is sacrificed to gain more space. If you burn VCD to a 80min/700MB disc then the capacity is ~800MB's. Since VCD is ~10MB/min that gives you 80min of VCD per 80min CD.

I would suggest using something other than Nero for converting. Still it may allow you to encode at VCD resolution. A bitrate of 1500-1800 for the video and 192k AC3 audio should give you decent enough quality whilst allowing you to fit hours of video per DVD. You could also go with Half D1 resolution.

              that's a good explanation, i think i have done 801 or 802 on a standard cd-r too.
