    DVD to XVid with subs

I wanted to convert a DVD with subtitles to AVI(Xvid) with subtitles(hard sub). The original DVD subtitles were out of sync.So I went about in the following way:
1.Demuxed the DVD to video and audio streams using PGCDemux.
2.Ripped the DVD subtitle to .srt format using Subrip.
3.Used Subtitle Workshop to correct the .srt file regarding sync problems
4.Took all three(video m2v,audio ac3 and subtitle .srt) in Virtualdubmod to encode using Xvid and Lame mp3.

    Now I have 2 questions:
1.Is there a BETTER(qualitywise) way to do this?
2.Is there an EASIER way to do this?

there is an easier way, download & install vsfilter and extract vobsubs (no need for OCR). then hardsub with virtualdubmod or avisynth vobsub()

The subtitle GRADUALLY goes out of sync.So there is no FIXED amount of delay/advance.Will Subresync correct it?How?

guess you can't use vobsubs then!

but there is something i would change in your method that'll make it go a little faster-- vdub does an unnecessary colourspace conversion when using filters, best to use avisynth for cropping, resizing and adding subs via textsub() then feed into vdub and run a "fast compress".

though if you're willing to try something new, meGUI is excellent

I downloaded meGUI.At first look I did not see any option to add subtitles.Did I miss something Anon?
BTW, SimpleDivX also uses mencoder for encoding. But I found SimpleDivx a bit buggy.Any thoughts on that Anon?

are you encoding this for a standalone player?

hardsubs can be added into the avisynth script

                      Yes.
                      And what about SimpleDivX?

SimpleDivX is still using mencoder for encoding (and not actually encoding via divx despite the name)? mencoder has its own subtitle renderer or you can still use vsfilter/AVISynth.

                          never used simpledivx.

                          some basic steps for megui:

                          1. install avisynth & dgindex, copy dgdecode.dll from dgindex folder to avisynth plugins folder. also copy vsfilter.dll

                          2. download xvid encraw.exe http://brother-john.net and place in megui folder

                          3. open the VOB(s) in dgindex, go file-->save project, you'll end up with a project file and audio streams

                          4. run megui, go tools-->avisynth script creator, point it to the d2v file, do cropping & resizing as needed, hit the "edit" tab, and make this the 2nd line in the script, except adjust paths and filenames to match what you have
                          Code:
                          textsub("c:\path\to\subtitles.srt")
save the script and check the preview to ensure all looks well, pick the xvid codec & avi container, go tools-->bitrate calculator and work out the bitrate, click apply. click "config" and set up xvid how you wish. click "enqueue", click the "queue" tab & start

                              Anon,
Slowly getting the hang of things in meGUI.There seems to be an option of creating chapters.I created chapters in an avi and saved it as txt file. But I cannot get it in my final video.Do I have to use an AVISynth script pointing to that file?Do avi support chapters?
