I'm hopeless trying to convert mpeg2 to avi

I have bought Nero 7 ultra and I was told as long as I register it all on line I can easily convert a mpeg2 to a avi that will play in windows movie maker. I have a project that I had already started there so I want to finish it before I start on Nero. Well needless to say I am hopeless I have looked and tried to convert it in Nero and it hasn't worked I am totally lost I don't even know where to look anymore. Any advise would be great. Thank you in advance.

I get the video but the audio is way ahead of the video. The video lags way way behind and it is in slow motion. I really don't know how to correct this. any suggestions to what I am doing wrong?? Thank you in advance for ur help.

IMO Virtualdub mpeg2 or Virtualdub mod is as good as any and better than most. If you're having video/audio sync problems demux the audio/video, encode the audio/video separately, mux the two back together. If the length of the audio and video aren't the same you can use a tool such as Audacity (free) to adjust the length of the audio. Their are a couple of settings in Vdub you can also use to try to adjust the audio. To get detailed instructions you should follow a guide untill you are more familiar with audio/video proceedures.
