DVD to Xvid recommendations.

My new DVD player does DivX and wanted to try it out. I have tried Plato DVD Ripper which keeps the 16:9 but doesn't do more than 1000k bitrate. The picture pixelates a lot. I have also got AoA DVD Rippere which shows much better bitrate (I set it to 1500k) but doesn't keep 16:9 from the tests I have done.

Is there a similar program that does both and is really simple and comes in a full functional trial. I only want to do a few go's so I won;t be using it past the trial.

I am not interested in anything like Gordion Knot as it is too many steps. I just want to select the DVD IFO, select the compression/settings and encode.

How do I make AutoGK keep the original 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 size? I put 720 as the width and it is doing it as 720 x 416 with a AR of 1.73:1. It needs to be the orginal 720 x 576 at 2.35:1.

try disabling autocrop, IIRC you need to set threshold to 0. though preserving black borders hurts compressibility, if only a little.

I am not using autocrop. I also set aspect ratio to original. It is now doing 720 x 448.

It seems to be doing it now after several failed attempts. I hope the advanced settings stay as they are as I don't know what I did.

When I did a xvid before. The subs were part of the picture and couldn't be removed. Are they suppose to work like on DVD's and only come up if they are forced or press the sub button?

If you just want to test you avi/divx player.

Various modified/homegrown software programs for creating AVI and Mpeg2 output associated with DVD's. But the author does not keep up with the latest software programs, but a good learning and playing tool.

If subs were part of the picture then they were 'hard' subs and were in fact encoded as part of the video.Hence they were not removable.I never use hard subs.Instead,I place the sub file(usually .srt) and the video file in the same folder(both must have EXACTLY the same name e.g nwg.avi and nwg.srt).Now the DivX compatible player should play the video with the subs .Also you can turn the subs OFF and still watch the video only.
