Converting DV Video to Divx

Hi

Can anyone help me out with this problem.

I have captured a dv file of about 4.5gb in size that using TMPGenc can convert to either VCD or SVCD however with 'ok' results. But......

I am trying to convert this file to DivX using Virtual Dub but unfortunately the latest version of V Dub cannot convert the audio - it will convert the video and encode that to Divx but the audio cannot be done. It complains of a type 1 dv file cannot extract the audio as it uses only 1 stream (?)

Now TMPGenc can do the job but not to DivX

So

Is there a method to convert this dv file to Divx as I figure that will offer the best and least 'lossy' form of compression to store it onto a CDR.

I can output the file from my DV Camcorder to a VCR tape but would love to archive it to CDR in Divx format - WITH sound...!!!!

Install DivX 3.11 alpha codec + Radium MP3 codec. Use Nandub and open your avi file. Select full processing mode in both vedio and audio. Select File->two passes. So a DivX file will be generated.

I tried what you had written but still got the following message:

'Warning Type 1 DV file Detected. Type-1 DV files have video and audio combined into 1 stream..................'

Basically it will only encode the video and not the sound - which is a shame as I would have thought that people would be able to do this, somehow.....?

Thankyou Wilbert for your Link - it has certainly given me a pointer, hopefully in the right direction.

I use MGI VideoWave 5 to capture and I am not sure if any capture software can produce a type 2 DV file.

Maybe with that link I could find a method to capture with Type-2 or at least convert a Type-1 to Type-2.

Isn't it possible to extract the audio (as WAV) from that software MGI VideoWave 5 ?

Maybe you can try that editstudio proggie.

if u want quality and quantity, do this:

capture using


NO RECOMPRESSION
PCM AUDIO CD QUALITY
320*240
30fps
YU12/YV12

u need alot of hdd space

then convert to MPEG2 using TMPGENC then to DIVX using vidomi using divx 3.11alpha fast motion with bitrate of 6000.

u will find that the quality is excellent and file size is low.

Thanx techno for your help.

What I have been able to do, with help from you people, is to get hold of a small (80k) utility that converts my Type-1 DV files to a Type-2.

This allows VDub to read both the audio and video and so can encode them.

Now to master the art of compression

This must be akin to Alchemy.

Morgan, it is suppose to be huge

Because it is NOT compressing, if u compress and capture at the same time, U WILL lose quality.

This setting, I have been able to make NEAR DVD quality captured videos and it is sweet.

I am giving my tips cause I have been capturing for over 3 years now and this gives me the best.

Thanks techno I agree on no compression for the best results.

I capture from my Camcorder in DV Video - 720x576 via my firewire card and the size of a 14 minute video was just over 3gb when converted to a Type-2 file.

But the quality is very very good.

Converting to VCD or SVCD is good for people who do not have a PC and yet could play the disk in their Stand alone player. I was using that method to archive BUT there is serious quality issues.

So to DivX.

I will follow your suggestion using Vidomi (?) - not used it before and the 3.11 Alpha DivX (better than 5.02 ? ) with fast motion and a bit rate of 6000. I have only just started to use V-Dub and trying to understand that

u want the file size to be low and still the same quality?

reduce the res, when capturing to 320*240 or 352*288.

Then u will see!

DIVX 3.11alpha is better, and use fast motion cause file size will be even lower but same quality as when captured.
