DVD encoded(divX6) or shrink(35/40%)

anyone tryed to encode a long DVD (dixX 5/6) to a size of a blank one (4463mb) and compare the quality of the image of the same DVD compressed 35/40% in DVDshrink (lets say 7/8 Mbps became 4/5 Mbps) ?

does it make any sense?

DVDShrink transcode the main video file, so the quality will not be that good...at least I never really liked the result. DivX in a high bit rate setting preserves more details [XviD too] or you can use x264.

mpeg4 allows better compression than mpeg2-- generally you can halve the video bitrate, and with the right settings, the output will be very close to the original.

Made my test this time with Gknot (divX 5): output file size: 4463 Mb, after compression test, the bits/pixel/frame lead me to choose the res. of 1280x720. the avi came out perfectly ok.

As i use a home cinema video projector to display a huge screen, i guess i will allways have advantage in using this resolution?...compared to...using a standalone component output but only with a 720*400 for the same rip file.

upconverting usually just increases processing time and decoding requirements, better to leave it at the original resolution.

what if... i don´t bother much with the increased processing time and decoding requirements...but instead, do bother in having 1.5meters of diagonal screen with the best resolution possible?

the original resolution; your projector will upscale as necessary.

however if you really don't care about processing time etc and don't mind a possibly steep learning curve, there are avisynth filters/functions like iip and seesaw which can work well

just ended another rip (was already processing before i you post) of a final avi with 1664*928, played it with ZP and from time to time the video freezes while the audio goes on...

Did you try to uninstall and then reinstall the DivX codec? And did you get your codec from the Official DivX site?

I agree. Moreover you can never have a better resolution than the original...if the original does not have the AV information in it, you can not have it no matter how higher the resolution you set for the result.

is that a divx encode? what's the cpu load in task manager during playback?

as mentioned already, it's of no benefit to simply resize to a higher res, and especially without filtering.

Xvid/ac3 encode , CPU load 60% max.

Now made another rip, same settings as the one above but at 1280x720, now it plays perfectly on my CPU...
