    Calculate resolution

    Hi there,

I have a source video, recorded from TV, and I'm gonna encode it to x264 using mencoder.

Now, the bitrate calculation for audio and video is not a problem but I don't know how to calculate the hight and width.

When I have used AutoGK to encode some recorded episodes to XviD they all have different resolution when the source have been the same.

Does anyone know as to make an optimal resolution calculation?

    welcome to the forum

an "optimal" resolution would be identical to the source, and mod16. consider using MeGUI for something easier.

Thanks for the quick answer, I was thinking the same thing about using the same resolution as the source.
The thing is that the source is 720x572 and the XviDs created by AutoGK are ~624x464, why is AutoGK downsizing them?

i don't use autoGK, but i'm sure you can specify output resolution in the settings somewhere

though it's recommended to crop black borders if needed

Yes you can specify output resolution but I use the auto-settings and there are no black borders.
I remember reading somewhere that the width of an Xvid should be somewhere between 512 and 640, do you know why?

            there's no reason for that
