Opinions on good program for hard-subs?

Any suggestions on good (non-mac) software to take a DVD rip (AVI, MPG, M4V, RMVB,any format, not an issue) and a separate subtitle file (ie sub, ssa, srt), and merge them into a true hard-sub. I'm not looking for adding them into a container, rather permanently burning them into the film.

Virtualdub-MPEG2 can do it for avi.
TMPGEnc can do this for MPEG.

Eek!!! HELP. All of a sudden the subtitler filter stopped working. I was just tolling along and then all of a sudden my output files no longer were recording the sub track. In fact they don't even show up in the preview filtered mode. What in the world did I do wrong?!?!?

Make sure you have the Subtitler.vdf or the Vsfilter.vdf file in the Plugins folder of VirtualdubMPEG2.

I do. Actually I think it has something to do with something I installed with K-Lite Codec Package now that I'm going back and forth. Stupid software needs! Any ideas on tweaks that may make things not work?

Uninstall K-Lite and install FFDSHOW instead.

I have FFDSHOW Audio, Video and VFW. I'm wondering if it changed the default settings with the latest upgrade. I've been tweaking back and forth and briefly had the subs again (but lost the rest of the video). not sure what I did wrong.

I now have subs and video but it's telling me that there is no valid audio decompresser. Argh.

1st how 'bad off' would I be using direct stream processing?
2nd which one should I use in FFDSHOW?

3rd Is there anything else out there that can do the same thing as AVISynth+vurtualdub+subtitler?

What exactly do you wish to accomplish ? Give your original File information using Mediainfo.

Pretty bad off, it won't work at all. Use Fast Compress (which is not all that fast, just disables Virtualdub's filters and subsequently the colourspace conversion).
