Well I can't speak for everyone but for me when I did a DivX 3 encoding i was always disappointed with my results and i tried DivX 4 (using the 2 pass encoding) and my results were GREAT! in comparision to my previous attempts.
So yeh id go with DivX 4. It takes longer but the quality makes up for that
