Ok, Gk is the only Software that has given me the right quality I was looking for. I've read several guides but I still have a few questions.
I'm using GK 0.27 and Divix 5.03 Pro
1) Whenever I want to encode on the las save window I can choose Both pass encoding, first pass, second pass but the one pass button is disabled. Unfortunatelly I have a slow PIII 500 machine and I cant wait 14+ hrs for a vcd movie. Is there a way I can enable one pass only encoding?
2) When saving I can choose the avi settings, vcd settings or svcd settings. Is there a way I can set the bitrate on vcd or svcd settings? This is usefull when making 2 cds SVCDs. i.e. 1:46hr movie would use a 1902 bitrate and not 2520

You shouldn't do that, GordianKnot0.27 does not work properly with divx5.03, only 5.02 (or 3.11).
But this is ofcourse rather irrelevant if you wish to make (s)vcd.

No GordianKnot only does 2 pass encoding. But again this is somewhat irrelevant if you wish to do (s)vcd's, which ofcourse can't use divx encoding.

No GordianKnot only does divx encoding, not (s)vcd's. You can however use GordianKnot to make a avs file which you can then take into tmpegc to make (s)vcd, but don't ask me how I have absolutly no experience with that.
Well I was wrong, in 0.27, You sure can directly encode to an AVI file with the exact specifications as VCD or SVCD. Check the "Save AVS" dialog, resizing option. Again this is done on a two pass basis which I don' want. Does anyone know if theres a file or something I can modify so the encoding is made in one pass only?
As you suggested I used tmpg and It worked perfectly, so I dont have problems with SVCDs anymore, but that doesn't solve my avi problem. if anyone could help thanks in advance.
would you be so kind as to explain in very detail what your intention is???
your talking about gk and divx + vcd/svcd at the same time.
doesnt make much sense to me.
if you want to encode using divx 5.0.3 but dont want to use a 2 pass routine (wouldnt know why, but dont care either) and thus prefering 1 pass constant quality you'll have to control virtualdub manually.
I talked about the two things at the same time to make only one post and not several.
Anyway I want to backup my dvds in DIVX format (1 or 2 cds depending on lenght of the picture) to playback on my computer, GK has offered me the best compression quality so I want to use It. The reason why I want to make a one pass encoding is because I don't have a state of the art computer, I have a slow PIII 500 and with 2 pass encoding It would take about 14-16 hrs per movie. Plus 4 hrs per disc if I want to reencode to SVCD, thats a lot of time for me.
I'm talking about VCD and SVCD also because I have the opportunity to play them back on my DVD player. But nevermind regarding this since I already figured It out.
Would you be so kind to explain me how to control virtualdub manually for doing 1 pass encoding?
I've been using your guide but when I get to the stage where I do the compressibility check my computer seems to do nothing and I get an error messege in the Encoder log saying:
Error: Could not count encoded frames
Error:Could not open_5perc_D5_SharpBicupic_640x336.log
I'm using DivX 5.0.1 Bundle and Fraunhofer Radium Codec
For such a great guide. I tried you Gknot guide and am
totally sold to it. I am pretty new to all this and got enticed
when a friend loaned me a DivX movie (it was a nice porn )
I have a few questions:
1) I am creating the DivX using GKnot and ac3 file output from
DVD2AVI. Is there any way I can increase the Volume?
2) When I run the Sampling and press load to get the percentage
(Step 3.9) I get nothing!
3) When I try and use the S-Video output from the card (I am planning to get the ATI All in Wonder) - will it show correctly on the TV. 4:3 style.
From what I see I do not set any aspect ratio for the output.
I am encoding a 16:9 NTSC Film.
If in the future I get a widescreen TV will it show correctly on that?
