I know that DivX4.11 will play DivX3.11, I currenlty have DivX4.11 installed and all works fine. But this means that I can only encode avi with DivX4.11 but what about encoidng with DivX3.11? If I install DivX3.11 it overwrite the 4.11... =( Is there a way to have both?Comment

I've installed 4.11 after I installed 3.11 and I said yes to the question if I wanted to play DivX 3 with DivX 4.11. And I can still encode DivX 3.11.Comment

I currently have 3 divx codecs in my pc. You will find these in the c:\windows\system32 directory under WinXP. They are: Divx32.dll(DivX 3.20a), Divx32f.dll(Divx 4.01), and DivX.dll(Divx 4.11). I downloaded the Divx 4.11 bundle from www.divx.com. This installed the Divx 4.11 codec and "The Playa" divx media player. As was stated earlier I was asked if I wanted to play my divx 3.11 media with the device and I said yes.
What's most important out of all this is which you use to encode. I've read in this article, http://www.tomshardware.com/video/01...ask4.1-06.html that the Divx 3.20a is still a better codec than 4.01, based on their benchmarks. But I now encode with the Divx 4.11 codec, because it's optimized for the SSE instructions in the Pentium 3/4, and the Athlon XP will also benefit from this enhancement. Here's another article from Tomshardware of interest.... http://www.tomshardware.com/video/01...207/index.html
I've used the new Flask xmpeg 4.2a in combination with the divx 4.11 codec...and I've cut encoding times by 66%. I have a P3 733 (133mhz fsb) with 256 sdram. With Flask 0.6 and either Divx 3.20a/Divx 4.01 a 2-hour film encoding use to take about 18-hours. Last night I encoded the same film in 6-hours! woohoo! The last link has all the benchmarks, so if you have a chance try it out...Comment

You can install DivX 4.11 and still continue to use DivX 3.11 alpha without any problem.
The only point is that when you install DivX 4.11 it asks you if you want to play divX3.11 avis using divX4.11 codec, that's all.
But, when you encode your rip, you can use the codec you want.
Personnaly, I find 4.11 in 2 pass mode is much better quality...Rip In Peace

Got this one figured out
I have both codecs installed, but I choose to only encode in 3.11 Alpha, mainly because it runs better on my machine (only a pentium 300). You'd be surprised how much better performance a decode/playback is on a system this slow.
But say that you installed 4.11, told it to play 3.11 for you, but then you wanted to use the original 3.11 to decode. The best way to fix this is to go into your control panel, double click on Multimedia, and click on the "Devices" tab. Next, open the "Video Compression Codecs" tree, and uninstall both codecs (to be safe.....I haven't tried to uninstall just 4.11 and see if it would automaticly switch it's default 3.11 playback, but I assume it would).
After the codecs are gone, find the install software you downloaded (from say...www.divx.com) or wherever, and re-install the software. Don't forget to chose "No" on the 3.11 playback, or you've just wasted 5 mins of your busy busy busy life.
You can use this method to remove just about any codec (audio or video) if need be.Comment

I find if you encode a movie using the 3.11 and do a fast and low join you get better quality results then you do with just the Version 4 codecComment

Yeah, I've read
I read through the MakeFilm guide, and sounds like it would work a lot better, but it does take a long time to encode 2 avi's. I've been doing these encodes on a friends computer, and letting just one-pass encode overnight is like "over-staying your welcome". I'll get my own DVD-ROM eventually.Comment

Re: Got this one figured out
I'm running Win XP. I have tried to remove the 3.11 codecs but it is unsuccessful.
I have clicked "remove" in the video codec section to remove both the low and high pass divx codecs but they keep popping back THEMSELVES.
I can remove the 4.11 though. Wierd.............
