Converting to iPod 5.5G

Hello

I am looking for a Freeware to convert AVI and other Video Files (including DVDs) for my iPod 5.5G. It must have a feature to hard code subtitles in the converted file.

I have tested VEDoMe, but unfortunately the result is incompatible with the iPod. On the other hand Videora does not support subtitle hardcoding. any other good piece of software with the above feature? please sugest.

Could you please:
1. Provide the download link (pretty common name, so I might download the wrong one- don't want to take any chances )
2. Explain the subtitle portion a little bit more specifically?
