I need help with virtualdub/avi problem!

I downloaded virtualdub and photoshop because I want to make gifs.

I downloaded a youtube video and converted it into an avi format. I open the file on virtualdub but it's just a black screen. How do I fix this?

Help would be so appreciated. If this is in the wrong forum, please tell me. I'm new to all of this.
