          Also depending on what you are doing, AviDemux can be very handy. Often you can put the video untouched into another container only converting the audio track. It's also good for "cleaning up" avi videos that need frames rebuilt or whatnot.

          It's a bit quirky but another nice free tool is Quick AVI Creator. It uses xvid and x264. You can convert between wmv, avi, mp4, mkv etc.. It uses an AviSynth script so you can add your own tweaks like resizing with your desired resizer etc..

          The default is to output the same res as input. Good for converting to HD avi. Many other converters assume you want to size down to SD.

            Format Factory is my fav. and you can use avisynth with it, I like the fact that with settings it has a default for aspect ration, fps, and also for the audio settings. It is also quite fast with a 4 core machine. It will convert to any format you can think of. I use it to convert mpg4 avi to .mov or .kkv to .mov to then process the file with Procoder 3 as sometimes Procoder doesn't like the source file.
