    manga & cartoons with DivX

I'm trying to encode some manga but keep getting interlacing artefacts- It looks like the encoded AVI frames are somehow 'inbetween' frames found in the VOB, alternate horizontal lines from the frame before and after.
I've had this problem before with cartoons and my vide capture board which was fixed by a 2:1 reduction which I'm reluctant to do here- I want to keep a fairly decent resolution (typically 640x344).

I've played with various interlacing settings in DivX 5 & flask to no avail. I usually encode into Div3 but this makes no difference.

Is there an obvious framrate problem? It's a region 2 DVD and so I'm assuming 25fps and encoding @25fps. I can't seem to find out anything the the contrary.

As far as I can see this is straighforward interlacing causing the problem. As the standard de-interlacing options in Div5 and flask haven't worked, what will?

    Thanks-

When you open the .ifo file using Flask, the program should automatically select the correct framerate for you to use. You should not change the framerate unless you absolutely know that the framerate you wish to use is the correct one. You can also use DVD2AVI to double-check the frame rate of the video.

When it comes to interlace problems though, you should never consider flask as your tool as it is very poor at that. Consider using GordianKnot or nandub. Both have excellent deinterlacing capabilities and guides for them abound. Search for it at Doom9. Assuming the framerate of the video is truly 25fps, Inverse Telecine is out of your options (which is a pity because it works better than the usual deinterlacer). Your next choice would be Smart Deinterlace, which is basically a deinterlacer with a lot more tweakable options to use.

One last thing. Your japanese animation show is called Anime. Manga is the comic style of anime (ie. prints).

What i like to know is what anime u are talking about?
There are a lot of poorly NTSC to PAL converted ones out there that cannot be properly deinterlaced at all (DBZ and NGE are 2 of those buggers) and usually have a lot of ghosting and noise in the DVD source already.

Yes it's a crappy program, use the Gknot vdub divx5 or Gknot nandub divx3.11 method, both are muchos better!!

Is it the PAL version (region 2) then?

The PAL anime DVDs here seem to have been properly done with. It's a pity that the local selection is nowhere as diverse as you would find in fansub channels or in the US or Japan.

Well, my PAL Dragonball Z DVD's are from Australia but they aren't properly done at all!! Impossible to deinterlace them at aal and with a lot of ghosting and noise on the DVD source itself too!!

Hmm. I don't work with DBZ discs unfortunately. I was a fan of the show, but not anymore though.

                          Cheers all-

It's _much_ happier now- minimal if no ghosting at all!

By the way- I'm looking at UK PAL anime classics (Akira, Ghost in the shell...)
And yeah- the UK DVD selection is really poor....
Good thing I'm off to the US soon, though NTSC was never really my thing.

One more thing- a lot of the genuine hong kong cinema and anime DVDs I've come across in the UK are not region encoded! or at least smartripper says they aren't encoded... Is this true of US anime/HK DVDs?

                          Cheers
