A lot. Depends on what type of storyline you like. Good selections would include:
Vision of Escaflowne, Hikaru no Go, Slayers (The first season), Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres, Love Hina, Fruits Basket, Neon Genesis Evangelion, RahXephon, and many others...

I must say I haven't heard of any of those...
I have a somewhat limited exposure to anime, but the things I have liked are I suppose in a very similar vein- Ghost in the shell, Battle Angel Akita and the classic Akira.
My local video rental has a sizeable collection but I really haven't got a clue in which genre a video is in- I have to go on the cover picture...
What's good in this kind of theme?
      Cheers-

I have unfortunately not viewed any of these old titles you listed. The ones I recommended are pretty much recent, with Fushigi Yuugi being a 1996 show, and Hikaru no Go and RahXephon released last year and are still probably on show in Japan itself.

The selection for anime in Australia is very bad as well and I get most of my stuff from the net. I knew of one site that has nearly a complete list of ALL the available anime titles, but I've lost the link. Try searching in Anipike. You may not find what you need, but you will definitely learn and enjoy more than you wanted.

          Thanks!
I'm getting lost in the sheer oceans of anime titles that site is throwing at me!
Unfortunately one site does seem to suggest that Battle Angel Akita (Alita in the US) will be released dec. 2003. Humf.

But thanks again- I'm already drawing up my shopping list

          Cheers-

            Have fun.

p.s. I'm having trouble controlling my budget too. Downloading from the net is so much more trouble, compared to buying cheap (and yet good quality) DVDs.
