i have a few downloaded movies in DivX avi files. i can fit an entire 90minute movie onto a cd. what are the best programs/settings to use to convert a 1.25mbit mpg to divx? i know that is low quality but its all right to me. I tried a 10second mpg clip to convert. The original file was 2.00mb. The divx was 2.98mb. That is larger and wasnt as good. I know im doing something wrong. What can i do?

well what is the best bitrate to use? i ahve downloaded some clips of tv shows before in divx and the file size was really small and the quality was just as good as my mpeg recordingsComment

It depends on your video, resolution- and compressibility-wise. Compressing to DivX will discard details from the video and the lower the bitrate is, more detail is lost (As you can expect from a lossy format). Your eyes will be the best judge for that. Download a bitrate calculator, input your desired filesize as, say, 1MB. Assuming you are going to be comrpessing the audio to MP3, input also the bitrate you are going to assign to it. The calculator will yield the bitrate you are to use.
If you wish to achieve the best quality, use 2-pass mode encoding as well. I can't explain everything about it here. You can, however, look for the guide from this collection of guides here.Comment
