    Fast Encoding

Hey. I am using field deinterlace is GKnot, and its going at 17 frames a sec when encoding. Is there any way I can make it go faster? I know fast deinterlace does it, but it has problems.

well, if u r dvd ripping then no, you can't.

even if u have the fastest PC in the world (not crappy AMD, but a P4 2.26AGHz) then it will still encode at 10/17fps!

Read about it on Uncasms's guides or on www.doom9.org

17fps would be OK for a machine with about 1300 MHz. If you want it faster you can use a lower res or use low-quality-filters . DivX5.02pro would also give a little(!) more speed compared with the other codecs.

Or you could encode the audio separtely so u dont waste time doing it over and over when u want the perfect rip.

Encoding the video at a lower video resolution will see an increase in speed as well. Bilinear resizing is faster than bicubic too. If you don't mind the trade-off, it's worth considering.

Depends on what you care about. Making a quality movie, or getting the highest possible benchmark score?
Seems like youre more interested in how fast your pc is rather than how good the video will come out
Im not saying that speed is not important, just that quality is far more important than speed
But i understand that you want it to be faster, I mean it would be great for it to take 3 hours instead of 8
My solution would be to spend some hard earned cash on an AMD AthlonXP 2200+ and a crapload of DDR
If its not enough, you can alllways Overclock and Watercool

Sorry I got carried away with the smilies

              I'm curious now...

Do any programs have _proper_ support for multiprocessor machines? I doubt I'd ever buy one though...

I run two pretty much identical machines across a LAN and was thinking about some sort of distributed encoding.... At the mo' I just have the two machines doing different films at the same time.
Maybe this would be easier with some sort of memory share under Unix/linux....

I suppose you could crudely divide the film initially in two for the first pass and combine the stats, then for the second pass have one machine for each CDs worth (I tend to like 2 CDs to a film).

But anyway - I'm plodding along with my duron 750s and it takes an age!
Any codec writers out there listening?
              Cheers-

i recently came across a modified nandubversion which was said to able to make use of multiple pc in a lan.

the page is in german, however

                  Thanks for the link UncasMS-

Using my wonderful grasp of the German language, and some help from the Google translator, I've read the page and made some sense of it.
Things do seem to get a little hazy around the issue of processing audio at the same time... It may be safer to only do video and re-mux later.
Anyway- Will test out the software tomorrow.
                  Sleep beckons.

                  Cheers-
